[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀚𑁂 (je), from Sanskrit यः (yaḥ, “who”, nominative masculine singular relative pronoun) or possibly from य (ya) + इ (i, demonstrative). It was formerly written as জে (je), but then respelled under the influence of the Sanskrit etymon.
