Tim for president

I've actually deleted the thing twice and voted here to delete the version with a non-caps title. There's a link on deletion requests to the first piece of news I found about the guy.

As to sockpuppeting, it is pretty obvious it is the same guy and it's only something we really worry about if used in voting or block avoidance. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:33, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Images

Just a reminder, all images must have (url) sources. Bawolff 00:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Recently my edit to the story about the Canadian Sextuplets being given blood transfusions was considered vandalism and this is my counter argument.

Well since The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is the offcial bible that Jehovah's Witnesses use, it should be considered that most likely Mark Ruge and the watchtower.org would be quoting from the New World translation. That is why I considered it more Factually accurate to change the quote to original text from the translation that the group would have been using. Also it is unclear what exact page Mark Ruge directed the reporters to but on the Watchtower.org, the offcial site of Jehovah's Witnesses, but on the issue of blood there is this article http://www.watchtower.org/e/hb/index.htm?article=article_07.htm and if you scroll down some it eventually quotes the scripture in question and uses the same text I used.

Also it has been brought to my attention that the one source has original text before I edited it. But since I looked at the original text that Mark Ruge told the reporters too look at and it was my edited version, so obviously this error was on the part of reporter who wrote the original story on Canada.com and did not copy the text exactly but instead wrote it out in a different translation which is inaccurate to the original quote that Mark Ruge intended to have them see.

This I believe backs up my point that the scripture should be written in the translation that the original source had it from.--Darthbudge 18:59, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have not found any other news sources that quote it but it says clearly in the Canada.com source it says that Mark Ruge directed the reporters to the Jehovah's Witnesses website watchtower.org. And the link I posted above clearly quotes the scripture in the same manner that I did. I view this to higher source because this is the site that the reporters should have been quoting from because that is where they were directed and shown the scripture.--Darthbudge 20:43, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

image:TAGHeuer.jpg has been spedied

STOP!
STOP!

I deleted image:TAGHeuer.jpg, as I strongly suspect it came from a competing news organization (big no no in images at wikinews. See WN:FU) Actually I think it came from wikipedia (w:Image:TAGHeuer.TC.jpg) who in turn got it from http://www.linktrader.co.uk a competing news site. (No longer in operation, now domain parked. see http://web.archive.org/web/20050912062724/http://www.linktrader.co.uk/ ). The article this image was used on &mdsah; Prestigious 2007 design award given to TAG Heuer, currently has no image, which is a bad thing, and I'll try to find a replacement image (eventually). If you disagree with this deletion, please tell me, and I'll undelete. Bawolff 07:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

American football

I'm not so sure a sport popular in only one country merits lead article. Can you look for an alternative lead? --Brian McNeil / talk 20:29, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll have a poke about, perhaps need to polish something. You were well-intentioned with the change, and it may turn out this is the best for a lead on a content basis (I've not looked). I know if you dig out stats pages I'm one of the wiki's more active contributors but real life is severely curtailing my current contributions at this time. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:45, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews shorts

I just checked, the code to produce the table of contents is in the template for the wikinews shorts article. I'm reluctant to take it out of there without spending a lot of time looking in archives to see what effect it would have..

Upshot is... Ignore it, I don't like sources being listed with a bolded heading, but it works. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:56, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

shorts formatting is up for discussion.  — Doldrums(talk) 04:19, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

In fact every single image you have uploaded in the last couple of days have different licensing info then the source page. Am I correct in assuming that you just misread the page or something, and I should change them to reflect FlickR? Or do you have some reason to believe that these are under those licenses? NCAA basketball conference tournaments

Hello! Thanks for the comments on the templates...I borrowed the basic structure from some of the templates on Wikipedia. I'm slowly building up the various conference tournaments...some of them are done so far but if you'd like to help I'm using "Template:3RoundBracket" and "Template:4RoundBracket-Byes" to fill each page. If you need help using them I can explain them to you further, too. Just go ahead and work on anything that you can - I'm hoping to have all the individual conferences finished by the end of the evening (evening being in the midwestern United States). Hi

Hey there well first of all thanks for fixing the page up and correcting any of the other errors that you may have found on the article. also i wanted to ask what else can i do when i post news? does it always have to be sourced? what if the only source is from like lets say TV or a newspaper how can i relate to those sources?. Thanks much Maverick423 21:44, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alright well how to make a timetable will be nice =) the news i posted was straight from our radio news here in deep south texas, also 4 other stations have said the same stories these stations include Wild 104.1, 94.5 the rock, 100.3 Ktex. and well its just too many as they are all covering the story. Our local news is going to talk about it at 10 and they should have it on their website in 1 day. thats pretty much the timeline that the news follows down here. that is why i say that the news takes a while to come out on official sources (such as the net). well any extra help is much appreciatedMaverick423 21:57, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

u don't need to tag them for speedy. they're on a list already. think they used to be deleted by a bot, but looks like the bot is laying down on the job.  — Doldrums(talk) 20:28, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

dealing with copyvio

hi, just to let u know that there's a template - {{copyvio sas}} that u can place on user talk pages of editors who submit copyrighted text. also, when u tag an article as copyvio, it's good to blank the copyrighted text. happy firefighting! –Doldrums(talk) 16:14, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

the problem is that keeping the text as it is means that we're effectively publishing it - making it available for anyone to see, so it would amount to copyright infringement. normally, the people who do the tagging/blanking can be expected to do the job right, and if anybody wants to verify if the tagging was correct, they can go to the history and find out. best, –Doldrums(talk) 16:29, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Markie, well there is this article stating "Der Zwischenfall ereignete sich im Shatt al-Arab im Norden des Persischen Golfs." (The incident occured in the Shatt al-Arab in the north of the Persian Gulf). Here is also something in english stating "On that occasion Iran insisted that the British boats -- which it has not yet returned -- were intercepted only after they entered Iranian waters on the Shatt al-Arab." If I remember right many of the first breaking news on this incident stated that it happened on the Shatt al Arab. I produced this map based upon those statements. cheers -- Torsten 21:17, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use

I went ahead and agreed with your deletion request in the commons because I uploaded my image to the wrong area, but I noticed you deleted my fair use image uploaded locally to Wikinews for Delta's rebranding. It worked out because the old livery next to the new logo communicates a similar idea without raising copyright issues. I would, however, like to talk about putting multiple images into a single image for informational purposes in the future. I'd like to have the ability to take images from multiple sources, credit them, and at the same time receive credit for putting them in the same image. People do tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to copyright, and for good reason, but I strongly believe that fair use exists so that people can communicate original ideas using copyrighted material. Images containing images from multiple sources can also save time for the reader. The technical term in the journalism industry is "infographic," and I think Wikinews could benefit from having a process by which to create them using existing fair use guidelines. --Omaryak 21:53, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the deletion of this image, note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", which means this image can't be used on the Commons. Article

There is no internal wiki article for Operation Neptune, so I used an external one. I do not have time to write a Wikipedia article on this topic. 70.49.86.109 13:50, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just to let you know we do not use the date tags here in text and if there isnt a wp or wikinews link then an external link should not be used in the text section. If it is key to the article then it can be included in the external links section at the bottom of an article but as this link is not i have not included it. Thanks --MarkTalk 13:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Video

Heya!

I see you have previously shown some interest in Wikinews Video Edition and, need your help. As you may already know, the projet is is need of assistance - we have finished all the graphics and need to start actually brainstorming ideas for the first news story. We will cover one news story and, will cover it with much depth - the story will go for 15-20 minutes. We are looking for something which is not of direct interest to the media (ie. tax increases or politics) but rather, a heartfelt or deep story. Could you please help to collaborate and brainstorm here.

thanx, USer:symode09

Archive? Add?

I'm a little lost. You told me not to add the archive tag, and then a few days later you told me not to add anymore material. Why not archive it to prevent the additions OR allow additions since its not archived? C56C 20:23, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

re: copywritten image

I've uploaded the image you've asked me about for a wikinews article I'm writing. I pulled it from the Opie & Anthony wiki, and I realize it's copywritten, although the image exists for XM promotion. With that in mind, if it's still unacceptable, I'll replace it before I publish the page. Addendum: Well, now that you gave me no time to explain myself, I'm just going to go ahead and stop contributing to this site. Thanks for the chance. Booticon 18:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archiving

I see you've been having a go at the archiving. Please don't append the {{archive}} tag, instead put it after the publish tag which should be immediately before the categories. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:01, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Chat login

I seen you replace the wikizine chat to http://wnirc.awardspace.com/, I clicked on it and wanted to try it out so I typed in my IRC name "FellowWikiNews", after I logged out but when I clicked on the url again it showed my IRC username. When I do a hard refresh (ctrl-r) it quickly refreshes to "Wikinewsie???" then my name "FellowWikiNews" appears again. Please fix it!! FellowWikiNewsie 21:16, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I like the new interface thing. A couple of sugestions:
  • Channel should be a drop down menu with the choices:
    • #wikinews
    • #wikinews-en
    • #wikinews-spam
    • whatever the vandal chanel was
    • #en.wikinews on irc.wikimedia.org
    • possibly #wikinews-cabal
    • possibly other lang wiki channels

The information on the the intro is incorect. RC is at #en.wikinews at irc.wikimedia.org not #wikinews-en at irc.freenode.net

I think that is all, good work. Bawolff 22:10, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cambodia story

I can't find another source for the Cambodian-ASEAN story. It's pretty weak anyway. Can you please spike it? Thanks, and sorry for the trouble. I know better now. Wisekwai 20:26, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for looking, but it's the same story. I tried to punch it up a bit, but better writing cannot hide the fact that it's a one-source story. I should know better. Wisekwai 20:37, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Awaken

Hi Mark, I am surprised you haven't heard of awake (a·wak·ened, a·wak·en·ing, a·wak·en) [2] "cause to become awake or conscious" from Old English. First it was "president elect," now this. I thought us Americans were always the ones accused of not using enough of the English language. Now it seems that the vernacular of England's native sons is being abridged. --SVTCobra 18:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mark,

I'd like you to have a look at the page and share your thoughts. I've added your name as a participant since you previously showed interest in the project, remove it if I've been too bold there. Anyway I've listed some candidates and I was hoping that you could join in updating the template if you have time... Make sure to put the page on your watchlist!

{{Deletion request}}

I reverted your edit, use SVG over PNG. Big67 21:39, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Big67: I reverted you. your reasoning is flawed (The png is of good enough resolution for our purposes that there would be no difference in quality when using a png version vs an svg version). Also, the current icon was chosen after a long debate on WN:WC. At least discuss a bit before changing. Bawolff 04:24, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
