37°41′15″N 21°28′25″E / 37.6874°N 21.4737°E / 37.6874; 21.4737 Koliri, (Greek: Κολίρι, alternative spelling: Kolyri) is one of the biggest villages near Pyrgos, Greece, in the prefecture of Ilia. The GR-74 (Tripoli - Olympia - Pyrgos) is 2 km south and the GR-9/E55 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia) is west of the junction and about 3 to 4 km from the village.

Location

It is located two kilometers northeast from Pyrgos and nearly 18 km west of Olympia, on a small hill and it has a population of about 1,000 people (Its population, according to the 2001 census, is 1,061 inhabitants, 708 for the village) , and it's commonly known for its very good taverns. It has two churches: the Church of Saint Nicholas and the Church of the Saints Theodore. Its elevation is 90 m.

History

Small pine trees appeared after the fires of August 2007

It has taken its name by the bird kolirion, which used to fly over the region.

Koliri was one of the villages which were hit by the fires of August 2007. Some houses in the village were burned. The dense forests near Koliri are now black woods, including many olive groves. Luckily, 2 years after the fires, many small pine trees have appeared, as the forest regenerate itself.

Economy

Most of the people are farmers,and the highest percentage of them are Olive producers. A lot of people also have fields with orange and lemon trees. Those who are not farmers work in the private or public sector in the nearby city of Pyrgos.

General information

Koliri has a football team called Anatoli (meaning Sunrise in greek),which play in the local championship.
