Logo for Project:Graphics LabGraphics Lab/Photography workshop

The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

For graphists:

Chicago Chinatown Gate

Article(s): Chinatown, Chicago, Armour Square, Chicago, South Side (Chicago), Chinatown

Request: At Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Chicago Chinatown Gate, there was a comment that this image might be de-noise for chromatic fringing in the sky, TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:12, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):  Done. Fixed yellow tone + noise and made the image smaller in size. --Shandristhe azylean 13:14, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New York State Route 57

Article(s): New York State Route 57

Request: When the first pic is rendered at thumbnail size, the text in the marker is only faintly visible because the green and white are (I guess) dulled by the shadows. I also took a closeup pic of the marker; however, in this case the marker is too bright, making it near-illegible again. Is it possible to modify the pics so that the markers look a bit more natural (like here) and are more legible? – TMF 17:08, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):  Done: The second (closeup) file enhanced. PawełMM (talk) 13:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any chance of the first being improved? Of the two images above, the first has a better chance of being used in the article if improved. – TMF 09:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done: I tried to improve the first. Do you like it? PawełMM (talk) 08:00, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Misc ESC artists

Article(s): Anna Bergendahl Lena Meyer-Landrut Safura Alizadeh

Request: Correct the colors on these pictures. I think they are too red and green and perhaps too dark. Compare pictures taken at the same event here: http://www.qx.se/14863/-en-%28halv%29snygg-comeback-for-schlagerpride and here: http://www.stockholmpride.org/Journal/Festivalbilder/Schlagerbilder-block-2/ Thank you. Athyllis (talk) 15:12, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):  Done The last two didn't require much editing. Hope its okay now. Finemann (talk) 15:43, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nr one was good, however I'm doubtful about 2-4 because they don't seem to have natural colors. For example Safura's shirt got green when it's in fact gray and Lena got too much color in my opinion. It might look nice but is not good in an encyclopedia. Athyllis (talk) 14:15, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Redone: Acording to Athyllis remark. PawełMM (talk) 15:49, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Corrections to 2,3,4 are okay, but i think 1 is too bright Finemann (talk) 16:13, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Watermark Removals

Article(s): Josiah Quincy III, Jared Sparks, James Walker (Harvard)

Request: Remove watermarks. Thanks. Connormahtalk 23:05, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

  • Comment - tried these, but even with Photoshop's wonderful new Content Aware Fill on the Spot Healing Brush I can't get an acceptable result. Spot healing and clone stamping leave too many traces - the watermarks obscure too much important detail that would need to be redrawn, and then it's not enhancement/restoration, it's pretty much WP:OR - sorry, maybe someone else has more skill at this...  Begoontalk 17:11, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A method I have effectively used before (on File:Chester A. Arthur portrait c1882.jpg, for example) is using the upscaled thumbnail image available on the archive's image description page (i.e. this) to replace the watermark: the watermark is placed in different positions on the thumbnail and the full-scale images. Some additional cloning can then be used to make the upscaled and blurry areas seem more natural. It won't look perfect, but the watermarks are certainly removable. —Quibik (talk) 18:52, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Did the first one. I don't think I'll have time to do the others, though. (As a tip to anyone else interested in working with the others: simply adding noise (extracted from the background, for example) to the blurry areas works surprisingly well. Also, the thumbnail images need gamma correction by ~0.67.) —Quibik (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's clever, and superb - I'll try and find time to try one of the others with your method later today.  Begoontalk 23:14, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had a go at the second one using the technique you described.  Begoontalk 04:44, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You did a great job with the image! I also did some more general cleaning up and uploaded it as a new file. —Quibik (talk) 12:49, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome job, guys - can you possibly look at my request above for Woolsey, also? I'll add in the gallery. Thanks again. Connormah 22:00, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He was trickier, because there was a lot more noise in this one - in the colour, and there were eyeballs, wisps of hair and other fun stuff behind the watermark which weren't very distinct even in the thumbnail - so I've done the best I can in greyscale...  Begoontalk 05:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Remove opaque background.  ock  17:10, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): This doesn't look much like a photograph. It is better if you asked for a vectorized version in the Illustration lab. Finemann (talk) 07:54, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is; Apple's simplicity comes into play. It could be vectorized, though...  ono  05:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pedro II of Brazil

Resolved

Article(s): Pedro II of Brazil

Request: Hi, everyone, good night! I was wondering if any of you could help me out with this one. There is a picture of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil that've I tried to color it (See [1]). However, my skills are close to... none and I was unable to make his beard and hair blond. And I also believe his skin color is not close to how it truly was (See [2] or [3] or [4]). I'd like to warn you all that it is in fact a photomontage of a photograph of Pedro II (his head) and a painting of his (the body and background), both done in 1851. If you could also make that photomontage look better, that is, more real, it would be great. I am going to nominate the article for featured status so wanted everything to look perfect. Thank you all very much! Lecen (talk) 00:50, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):  Done Guess its okay now. Feel free to revert or ask for further improvements. Finemann (talk) 08:30, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, Finemann! There is one problem left to deal with, however: his heair and beard color. As can be ssen in these paintings (See [5] or [6] or [7]) it had a yellowish tone. Is someone capable of fixing that? Regards, --Lecen (talk) 12:16, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done I hope you find it satisfactory. The picture was also very reddish and dark so I made some enhancements to go with the blond hair. Regards, -- Orionisttalk 19:19, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe its fine, now. Thank you very much! --Lecen (talk) 11:20, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Shisa

Request: please create new variant (don't change this one, its perspective is important), crop to face, fix perspective, transparent background, name File:Shisa face.jpg or File:Shisa face.png... Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):  Done as requested. I vectorized the image and it is available at File:Shisa_face.svg. Hope the colors are okay. Finemann (talk) 07:51, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thank you! Can you trim off the advert text and the extra blank space?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:10, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Yeah, it's just the shop's name. You do great work!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 10:24, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How did you make it? Manual trace must've taken hours.... --Shandristhe azylean 14:44, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah! It's beautiful, really outstanding!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:37, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It was pretty easy actually, most vector graphics programs have a trace bitmap feature (I used Inkscape). It takes less than 5 min to do the whole thing! Finemann (talk) 07:59, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That photo of a sign is MOST LIKELY a copyright violation being a derivative work of a 2d artwork that is likely copyrighted. Therefore the SVG is a derivative work of a copyrighted work. I've marked both of these for deletion on Commons. — raekyT 05:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Most likely" does not give you free rein to remove tags others have legitimately placed there.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:37, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's an uncontroversial deletion on Commons as a commons:COM:DW, but since you want to fight it you can have a DR I suppose.. — raekyT 07:03, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If it was uncontroversial, there wouldn't be an alternate tag and a suggestion "Appeal: If you think that the file does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, replace this tag with {{delete}}."--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done - All of them are done now. The last one was hard to work on but I've managed to sort out most of its distortion. Hope they are ok!  Fallschirmjäger    21:23, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
御疲れ様です! Thank you so much for your hard work! That last one must have been a bear!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 05:05, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are these photographs of signs in Japan? If so then they're probably all derivative works and will need deleted. — raekyT 05:48, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Based on what? These are all fair-use images hosted on the English Wikipedia.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:24, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The artwork on them would pass the threshold of originality to grant it copyright protection to the creator... Thus the photos of the signs are derivative works and we would require OTRS of the original creator of the signs artwork to allow their use here. — raekyT 06:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
They are still under the same rules as movie posters and PSAs-only a reason for non-overuse, not a call to mass-delete.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:42, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trying to say your claiming WP:NFC? They wouldn't pass WP:NFCC, you'd have to choose ONE of them, and even then the way it's used in the article does not justify a non-free media claim. Secondly they're not even labeled as such, so I tagged them all as no-evidence-for-permission, since they're copyrighted works of Japan Tobacco International (JTI), they was advertisements. And finally, if they are non-free media they CAN'T be displayed here! — raekyT 07:01, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually because of those claims I re-tagged them as missing fair-use rationale, but be warned, none of these will pass WP:NFCC and all will be deleted under that most likely. In hindsight I think it was silly of me to assume that the flickr user was an official agent of JTI and that there was no realistic expectation of the possibly of getting evidence of permission. — raekyT 07:16, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, even if these signs are permanently in a public place, Japanese law doesn't seem to be on our side here. I can see them potentially being used under our non-free content criteria, but, almost certainly, as Raeky says, only one of them. In what article did you intend to use them? J Milburn (talk) 19:30, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Smoking in Japan, it does discuss these ads in one paragraph in the "Japanese smoking culture" section, but I'm skeptical that it needs an illustration of it under fair-use. I don't think the wording of the article would justify WP:NFCC#8. — raekyt 02:58, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, there's a brief, unsourced mention. If there were a couple of sources in the paragraph, and the style of the image was discussed (as it is now) I don't think I'd have too much objection to one of them being used. J Milburn (talk) 09:21, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting in Portugal

Article(s): Scouting in Portugal

Request: reverse finished badge and original artwork, so images are "before" and "after"... Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 12:58, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

These are probably all copyright violations as derivative works, even one is up for deletion as such. — raekyT 05:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, they're probably not copyright violations as derivative works, based on the discussion for that deletion, this is a local event, and unlike national emblems which really are copyrighted, it is both probable that the uploader had a hand in the production or creation of the badges, and that the design was not registered. This would explain why the uploader has both the original artwork and the finished badge. I know this is OR on my part, but I have designed dozens of badges and did not register any of them, as they are for temporary events, a weeklong camp, a training session....--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it is, see my comment in the deletion discussion. — raekyT 06:24, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be let down by the harsh comments from me and Kintetsubuffalo. The way the image looks is perfectly understandable considering the conditions and there's nothing wrong with that. It just needed some cleaning up. These images are certainly better than having no images at all! The version by Begoon seems to lack perspective correction, so I created a new version with that taken care of. I was a bit less aggressive in noise reduction as well. —Quibik (talk) 12:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I didn't even look at that - my effort was horribly distorted - too busy looking at the pixels to step back and look at the picture... I hang my head in shame, and I've done a new version. I don't think it's ever going to make a particularly good shot, though, because of that peculiar "in the middle of a word" expression you often get when snapping someone speaking rather than posed, and the noise in the shot. It's better than no free image at all, though - and Quibik's is still better than mine for colour in the tie etc...  Begoontalk 16:09, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
