On July 13, 2024, former United States president Donald Trump was injured in a shooting at a rally he held at a Farm Show venue in Butler, Pennsylvania.[1] According to witnesses and video footage, he appeared to have been bleeding from his right ear after the shooting.[2]

Background

Former President Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 United States presidential election. The rally was held as part of his presidential campaign for the election in order to raise votes in the swing state of Pennsylvania.[3] The shooting occurred a few days before the Republican National Convention to be held on July 15, 2024.

Aftermath

Immediately after the first round of shots were heard, United States Secret Service agents returned fire and killed the would-be assassin. Agents lunged at Trump, who after a few seconds on the ground, got up, raised and pumped his fist at the groud in defiance, and was then escorted to a vehicle.[4] A spokesman for the Secret Service confirmed that "an incident occured" and affirmed that Trump was "safe".[5] He was shortly afterwards examined at a local medical facility, according to campaign spokesman Steven Cheung who also affirmed that Trump was "fine".[6]


Responses

President Joe Biden received a briefing on the incident.[7]

Representative Ruben Gallego,[8] Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer,[9] House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries,[10] Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer,[11] and Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro[12] issued statements denouncing political violence.

On Twitter, supporters of Trump noted violent rhetoric surrounding Trump, while conspiratorial Democrat supporters accused Trump of staging an assassination attempt to gain sympathy.[13]
