Mattea Roach (born October 1998) is a Canadian LSAT tutor who holds a 22-game winning streak on the game show Jeopardy! since April 4, 2022. Roach is the most successful Canadian to play Jeopardy! and is placed in 5th for all-time regular season wins.[1] She has won $534,984 thus far, getting the correct question to 93% of buzzed-in answers. With her streak, Roach qualified for her season's Tournament of Champions.[2]

Early and personal life

Roach graduated from Sacred Heart School of Halifax and has family residing in Halifax and Cape Breton. She was raised for the first six years of her life and part of her adolescence in Halifax.[3] She maintains some traditions from Sacred Heart's Catholic curriculum and frequently prays the Hail Mary during her Jeopardy! introductions.[4] She graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in sexual diversity studies, political science, and women and gender studies.[5] She now works as an LSAT tutor and lives in Toronto.[6]

Roach identifies as lesbian.[7] She has said that her favorite game show growing up was Wheel of Fortune but that she also grew up watching Jeopardy!.[8] Roach has tattoos of Talking Heads quotes and has met Bill Gates.[9]

Jeopardy! streak

Roach has won 22 games and $534,984 so far. Roach ranks 5th in all-time regular season Jeopardy! earnings. At 23 years of age at the time of her winning streak, she is the youngest contestant to have won as much as she has.[4] After winning her first game and $32,001, Roach proclaimed "My student loan is paid off." She has also qualified for the Tournament of Champions this fall, when she'll face some of the show's most successful players.[10]

Roach was the only person on stage for Final Jeopardy! on April 20, 2022, for the first time since October 13, 2020. Roach said that she expected to face-off with Amy Schneider, who had a 40-day streak that ended a few months before Roach started competing.[11] Her season also includes 10-plus-game streaks from Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, and Jonathan Fisher.[12]

As the winningest Canadian, Roach has lamented that the late former host and Canadian Alex Trebek is not still hosting the game. Of her strategy, Roach said: "[Y]ou need to only focus on the things that you can control. Anything where there’s other people involved, there is fundamentally going to be uncertainty. You cannot prepare for every possible thing that could happen."[13]

Roach was in first by the time of Final Jeopardy! on April 27, 2022 (her 17th appearance). Her opponent, Ben Hsia, answered the clue correctly after he had bet all of his earnings, tying him with Roach. Roach also answered correctly, betting only $1 of her earnings, winning the game by $1.
