Middle Rasen is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England, located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of the town of Market Rasen. Today the village consists of two villages which have merged to become one; they were called Middle Rasen Drax and Middle Rasen Tupholme.[1][2]
Rasen is mentioned in Domesday Book of 1086, but West Rasen, Middle Rasen and Market Rasen are indistinguishable. In its entirety the list includes ten separate references to Rasen, which as a whole consists of 144 households.[3]
Middle Rasen has had at least two churches. That dedicated to Saint Paul which was demolished in 1860, and some of its fabric was used in the restoration of the church of Saint Peter. The old St Pauls church comprised a nave chancel South aisle and western tower in 1846, with probable demolished north aisle and north chapel.[4] St Peters church dates from the 12th century with later alterations and additions and is a grade II* listed building with an 1861 restoration by Bellamy and Hardy.[5]
A tower windmill was built in 1827 for the grinding of cereal, and which stopped working in 1925,and is now used as a store.[6] There was also a grade II listed three storey red brick watermill dating from the 18th century which was remodelled in 1827.[7][8]
Middle Rasen Primary School was built in 1875 to replace a charity school founded by the will of John Wilkinson who died in 1720.[9]
