Nicholas "Nick" Bateman (born 5 November 1967), also known as "Nasty Nick", is a British media personality and a former contestant on the first series of the British version of Big Brother.

Early life

Nick Bateman grew up in Kent with his four sisters. He was educated at a boarding school in Kent for five years, then at the private Gordonstoun School near Elgin in Scotland. Having graduated, Bateman opted away from university in favour of travelling around the world for the following three years before settling in Australia in 1988 for two years. He worked for ATN Channel 7 in Sydney, Australia on Sons and Daughters, Romper Room, and Newsworld.

On returning to England he then worked in the City of London for ten years as a broker for the Willis Group Holdings (working at Lloyd's of London) from 1990.

Big Brother

Bateman first came to public prominence as a contestant on the first series of the UK version of Big Brother. He was one of 40,000 people that applied to be in the first series of Big Brother in the United Kingdom in 2000. During his stay at the Big Brother house, he was the only contestant never to receive a single eviction nomination. However, he was soon dubbed "Nasty Nick" by the tabloid press because of his duplicitous nature, playing members off against one another. After 36 days he was finally exposed by the other housemates after being tipped off by producers, who confronted him over his behaviour and also uncovered his attempts to manipulate fellow housemates' votes in the weekly eviction process, in violation of Big Brother rules. He was asked to leave by the show's producers.[1]

After Big Brother

After his departure from the show, Nick enjoyed huge media exposure and attended many show-business parties and premieres. He went on to present the television show Trust Me and appeared on BBC2's "Email weekend" and Film Four's "Double Take". He wrote a book entitled Nasty Nick: How to be a Right Bastard. He has also featured in the reality television series Back to Reality and in the Big Brother pantomime. Later, he featured as the narrator in a stage production of The Rocky Horror Show.

Nick has spoken at both the Cambridge Union and Oxford Union and has worked as an after dinner speaker. In recent times, however, he has opted to step out of the public limelight to concentrate on writing including a stint as editor at large at The Good Holiday Guide.

Nick currently holds a private pilot's licence and a racing car licence.

Nick has enjoyed success as a freelance writer and as a social commentator. He has also trained at the BBC in Single Camera Director as well Camera operation and Avid Editing.

In 2010, Nick returned to the Big Brother house to compete in Ultimate Big Brother, the final series of Big Brother on Channel 4. During the show, the Big Brother narrator called him "Not So Nasty Nick", due his better behaviour compared to the first series of Big Brother. He finished in fifth place, becoming the only contestant ever to be there for the first and last day of the programme on Channel 4. Nick has played an active role on the Channel 5 companion show Big Brother's Bit On The Side since the 2011 Channel 5 relaunch of Big Brother.

In 2011, Nick and his magazine fashion stylist wife Lynnette Peck Bateman opened an online vintage fashion boutique called Lovely's Vintage Emporium which has won multi awards.

Nick also presented a radio show on 107.8 Academy FM (2011) in Kent every Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

Nick has appeared in Panto on several occasions. In the immediate aftermath of Big Brother, he appeared at the Theatre Royal Lincoln in Jack and the Beanstalk. Nick also appeared in the Big Brother Panto Cinderella. He returned to Panto for 2011 playing Baron Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Granville Theatre Ramsgate. He then played an ugly sister in Cinderella in Skegness during Christmas 2012.

Nick moved to Sydney, Australia to study in 2013.
