Thorvald had recently turned age 18 and his mother Margaret decided it was time to tell her son the truth about who his father was. During the past 18 years Thorvald has thought his father was the man Margaret had been married to before his birth. Upon learning that Somerled was his father, Thorvald got it in his head that he needed to search for his real father and meet him. That would require sailing north to some unknown destination.

Thorvald had a good friend, Sam, who owned a seaworthy sailing vessel. And Thorvald was able to convince Sam to help him find Somerled if that was possible. Creidhe who was always keeping tabs on Thorvald figured out his plans to leave their home isle and stowed away on Sam’s ship before he and Thorvald departed. By the time Sam and Thorvald discovered Creidhe as a stowaway it was too late to turn around and take her home.

The boat become damaged during the trip, but the three adventurers brought their vessel to shore on the lost isle that Somerled had landed on 18 years previous. And Somerled in fact made his home there still, but it took the three young people a while to learn who he was. There was an isle just to the south of Somerled’s isle where Foxmask’s people resided. They had powers of magic, and could create curses on tribes or communities. They were in turmoil because they lacked their leader or seer whom they call Foxmask.

The Ruler of Somerled’s isle had had a daughter and a son. The daughter had been given to Foxmask’s people 7 years previously so she could give birth to Foxmask. She in fact had Foxmask, but the child was to be maimed in order to become Foxmask, i.e., blinded and crippled. The Ruler’s son could not have this happen, and at age 12 he stole the child and hid himself and the child on an isle to the west of Somerled’s isle. Foxmask’s people could not follow to the isle because their beliefs told them they were not allowed on that isle. And no other peoples could approach the isle because of treacherous tides except during a two day window period each mid summer.

Foxmask’s people levied a curse on the Ruler’s people whereby no new births would be allowed to survive but moments past being born. This curse was to stay in effect until Foxmask was returned to his people or a new Foxmask was born and could become the Seer. For the past 5 years the Ruler has sent his best warriors to search the isle where his son and grandson (Foxmask) resided. But they could never find them.

Much of the book is about Thorvald’s and Creidhe’s adventures on Somerled’s isle looking for Somerled. During the course of those adventures Thorvald ends up becoming the leader of the summer expedition to the isle Foxmask was living on. And Creidhe ends of living on that same isle with the Ruler’s son and Foxmast. Thorvald successfully leads his expedition and in so doing he removes Creidhe and Foxmask from the isle on which they had been living. In accomplishing this Thorvald had injured the Ruler’s son and told Creidhe that he had killed him. Creidhe had fallen in love with the son, and was heartbroken.

Thorvald, Sam, Creidhe, Somerled, and Foxmask all go to the isle where Foxmask’s people lived. At one point we are led to believe Somerled was going to become the peoples’ new Foxmask. In fact, he lost one eye and had one leg broken before the ritual was stopped. The six year old Foxmask comes to the rescue and assumes his rightful role as Seer at that time. He does this without having to be blinded and crippled. Everyone seems to be happy except Creidhe since she has lost her love, or so she thinks.

Peace now exists between Foxmask’s people and the people who lived on Somerled’s isle. Thorvald becomes the new Ruler. Creidhe and Sam journey back to their homeland, but Creidhe remains heartbroken. A few seasons pass and Thorvald ventures home, but not to stay. He sees how heartbroken Creidhe is and informs her that he had lied to her and her love, her “husband,” was still alive. Creidhe comes back to life upon learning this news. She immediately asks Thorvald when he was going to return to Somerled’s isle.

Thorvald returns to the kingdom over which he rules, and takes Creidhe to the isle where her husband was still living. We are led to believe they will live happily ever after. The End.
