Harry W. Colmery (December 11, 1890-1979)[1] wrote the the GI Bill on Mayflower Hotel stationery. He received the American Legion's Distinguished Service Medal in 1975.[2]
The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs has put forth the Harry W. Colmery Educational Assistance Act of 2017.[3]
The Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, is named for him.
Early Life
Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Walter and Flora Colmery, he was one of four children. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1913. He graduated from law school at the University of Pittsburgh in 1916 and was admitted to the Utah bar in 1917.[4]
Military Service
Colmery served in the Army Air Service during WWI as an instructor and pursuit pilot. He was discharged in April, 1919.[5]
Personal Life
Colmery married his college sweetheart Minerva Hiserodt on December 20, 1919. The Colmerys had three children: Mary, Harry W., Jr., and Sarah Elizabeth.[6]
