Dr. John D. Horn High School is a secondary school in Mesquite, Texas, United States. The school serves the southern portion of Mesquite and the Mesquite ISD portion of Seagoville.

Horn, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Mesquite Independent School District. The school is under the UIL AAAAA division. The Jaguar is the school mascot, and the school colors are red and white.

History

John Horn High School is the newest high school opened in the Mesquite Independent School District. It is named after the former superintendent Dr. John D. Horn.

The school opened in 2000 with only 9th and 10th grade classes. The enrollment in that first school year was approximately 550. In the 2006-2007 school year its enrollment was over 2400 students. Ronnie Pardun was the first principal of the school succeeded by the current principal, Bruce Perkins.

Clubs and Organizations

The Johh Horn High School Fine Arts exhibits many successful programs. The Music Department features successful Choirs, Orchestra, and Bands. The John Horn High School Theatre operates two clubs: The Table Top Theatre Company and the 6292 Chapter of the International Thespian Society. JHHS dedicated the Lynda Horn Auditorium during the 2006-2007 school year. Both theatrical clubs excel and boast statewide recognition through the production of "Mmmbeth" at the Texas Thespian Convention in the fall of 2005. The clubs also volunteer their time serving as ushers for the Dallas Theatre Center. Also, the Theatre UIL play for 2006-2007: "Bits and Pieces" advanced to the Area competition, the first time in the JHHS Theatre history, and the first time in 10 years that a school from M.I.S.D. advanced from the District level.

The John Horn High School Academic Decathlon Team has won the Region XII competition five years in a row and advanced to the state level five years in a row: two years as a 4A school and 3 years as a 5A school. The team has finished within the top ten twice.

The Salsa Team, now known as the Jaguar Salseros, is rapidly rising in the world of Latin dance. They have performed all over the state of Texas and are scheduled to perform in Palm Springs, California; Tampa, Florida and Houston, Texas in summer 2008. They have qualified for the Texas Salsa Open in 2008.

The John Horn High School Orchestra has also seen several achievements throughout its history. In the 2007-2008 school year, both the Junior Varsity String Orchestra and Full Orchestra received Sweepstakes ratings in the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. The Varsity String Orchestra and Junior Varsity String Orchestra entered the 2008 SpringFest held at the Murchison Center at the University of North Texas and both received Division I ratings.

John Horn's JROTC Program is also recognized nationwide. They are able to boast over the widely sought Gold Star of Excellence. The current SAI is Colonel J. Methered. While the current AI's are 1st Seargent Knowlton and Seargent Major Putman.

Standard dress

All students at Horn are required to dress according to a standardized dress code (similar to a school uniform) as of 2005 the code is at all Mesquite ISD middle and high schools.


Feeder patterns

The following elementary schools feed into Horn: Pirrung, B.J. Smith, Gentry, Thompson, and Rutherford.

Berry Middle School and Terry Middle School feed into Horn High School.
