Kolyuchin Bay: Difference between revisions

Kolyuchinskaya Bay (Russian: Колючинская губа) is a bay in the Chukchi Sea at the northern shore of the Chukotka Peninsula, Russia. The length of the bay is 100 km. The width at its mouth is 2.8 km because of the Belyaka Spit, which encloses the Kolyuchin Bay, isolating it from the Chukchi Sea. The width increases to 37 km as it goes southwards and inland. The depth of the bay is 7 to 14 m. Kolyuchinskaya Bay is covered with ice most of the year.

In 1793, the bay was named Count Bezborodko Bay in honor of a Russian statesman Alexander Bezborodko. The locals could not get accustomed to this name and the bay was later renamed Kolyuchinskaya after Kolyuchin Island.
