This is a list of science fiction films organised chronologically. The tone of science fiction films is often a guide to the tone of the times the film was made: other worlds and species are viewed in turn as wonderful, terrifying, threatening, incomprehensible, and childishly benign.
The following list of science fiction films include a number that are notable and all too many that are considered mediocre, including quite a few that have been listed among the worst movies ever made.
