Gameplay

In total, the game has 20 modes of gameplay, including 8 new modes, and 5 hidden modes from Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary.[2]

Standard Modes

Main game rules. These rules always appear starting Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary.

  • Original

The original Puyo Puyo rule that does not have offsetting.

  • TSU

The first widely-adapted rule that allows offsetting garbage once.

  • Fever

The main rule in the Fever series. Allows continuous offsetting that fills up a unit in the fever meter. Filling it up will send the player to fever mode

  • Mission

Players are given tasks to do. First player finishing all tasks wins.

Returning Modes

Game modes that return from older games.

  • SUN

The main rule in Puyo Puyo Sun. When a player offsets, sun puyo will drop on their playfields. Sun puyo give more points that increases garbage sent.

  • Deka Puyo Rush

An endless fever-esque style of Transformation that uses giant puyo. One chain counts as another.

  • Chibi Puyo Fever====

An endless fever-esque style of Transformation that uses mini puyo in the style of fever mode.

  • Gimmick Modes

Modes exclusive to 20th Anniversary. All of these modes allow quick drop.

  • Chibi Puyo Excavation

An excavation mode of 15th anniversary that uses mini puyo.

  • Gust

From time to time, a wind blows from one side that pushes all puyo in one side.

  • Slot

A required number of puyo is shown. The one who turns it to zero obtains an item that boosts them or debuffs others.

  • 4 Next Puyo

Shows 4 preview puyo instead of two.

  • Block

This mode has "Block Puyo", where, they act as platforms.

  • Active

Puyo can still be dropped while chaining. This was Puyo Puyo Tetris' PuyoTetMix mode was based on.

  • Cross Spinner

After a timer, the field spins 180 degrees. The two halves rotate separately.

  • Quartet

All puyo are made up of fours.

Hidden Modes

  • Non-Stop Fever
  • Excavation
  • Giant Puyo
  • Ice Block
  • Spinner

"Pair Puyo"

A two-on-two team play mode. The teammates share Nuisance Puyo and "lives" - when one of the team's field is full, the board is replaced with a new board with a pre-made chain and costs a life.

You get bonuses for "Extra Chains" (firing a chain during your teammate's chain) and "Synchro Chains" (firing chains of the same length (3 or longer) at the same time).

Shop

Like Puyo Puyo Fever 2 there is a shop, but instead of ineffective game play items you can spend points you get from various modes for exchange of Puyo skins, alternate character voices, and alternate character costumes.

Soundtracks

The game also has two soundtracks. The first one is called Puyo Puyo!! Anniversary Sound Collection, which is a bonus soundtrack that is exclusive for the Wii, 3DS and PSP versions of the game. It has 27 songs from the series' 20-year history. The other is the official soundtrack by Wave Master entitled Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary Original Soundtrack, which debuted on February 4, 2012 in Japan. The soundtrack has 59 songs from the game that is composed by Hideki Abe.

Minor changes

  • The game uses simple shading, contrast to the art style used in the Fever series.
  • The light beam that travels when sending Nuisance Puyo is now thinner.
    • The beam color depends on the color of puyo cleared.
    • Also, the ring that appears when the beam hits the nuisance tray is also thinner.
  • The character's board changes to their "ouch" picture if their screen gets flooded, or if they have a large amount of Nuisance pending.
  • The background is now locked to the game mode.
    • Say, if the Fever rule is selected, the background will be Primp Town School. In active mode, it will be the school in nighttime, etc.
  • In Fever mode, the game board doesn't "squish" during chains anymore
