Professor R. Ananthanarayan Ph.D. (b: ? - d: 1998) was an eminent Indian Microbiologist and an Author.[1]
He was born in Trivandrum, Kerala. He graduated from Madras Medical College in 1941 and joined Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. He has joined Stanley Medical College, Madras in 1946. He has obtained Diploma in Bacteriology from London. His thesis on "The Fabric of the Influenza virus" earned him a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1953. He has joined as Professor of Bacteriology in Trivandrum Medical College and developed interest in Influenza. He was a member of the team set up to monitor the Asian Flu Pandemic in 1957-58. He has served as Principal in the Calicut Medical College from 1961 to 1967.[2] He was later became Principal of Kottayam Medical College. After retirement in 1969, he was Professor of Microbiology at Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College (MRMC), Gulbarga.
He was president of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (1976) and Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists and Kerala State branch of Indian Medical Association.
His work on "A. Asia 57" earned him a reputation as an International virologist recognized by the World Health Organization.
He was remembered by medical students for his "Textbook of Microbiologist written in collaboration with Dr. C. K. Jayaram Panicker. The eighth edition is now published.[3]
