Samastipur is a town and a municipality (nagar parishad) in Bihar, India. It is the headquarters of Samastipur district. The Burhi Gandak River flows through the town.

History

Samastipur used to be a part of the Darbhanga district until 1972, when the Samastipur district was carved out of Darbangha.

Demographics

As of 2011 census, Samastipur had a population of 67,925.[1]

Economy

Samastipur is an administrative centre for the East Central Railway.[2] There are several industries and small-scale industries which include a sugar factory near Magardahi ghat (Now Closed).

Transport

Samastipur is located 87 kilometers from the state capital Patna (104 minutes driving distance). The nearest airport, Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport, Patna Airport, is 91 kilometers from Samastipur. Samastipur Junction is a major railway station, which connects the town to major cities in India. The town is also connected to other places in Bihar by buses.

Places of interest

The Thaneshwar temple complex is located in the heart of the town. It includes templates dedicated to Shiva, Rama, Ganesha, Hanuman, Shani and Kali. Other locally famous temple include the Khatu Shyam Mandir (located in the Samastipur market). Several other temples are located in nearby villages within the Samastipur district. There is a famous kali temple in mujauna काली मंदिर के दीवार पर बाबा श्री छतनेश्वर जी के द्वारा माँ काली की आरती लिखा हुआ है. There is a famous Shiv Temple, known as Baba Khudneshwar Dham. The Temple located 16 km form Samastipur near Morwa block is unique example of Hindu-Muslim unity. In side the temple within a distance of about 3 meters there is Majar of Khudno Bibi along with Sivling. Temple is presently under renovation by local society members.Now this Place is Known as KHUDNESWAR DHAM. During Mahasivratri festival religious crowd from all corners of district are visiting this place for the prayer.

Language

The most common language spoken in Samastipur is Theti(similar to Maithli), although Hindi and English are used generally for official or diplomatic use. It is considered as a very sweet language.

Education

Samastipur has several schools and colleges. Most of the colleges are affiliated to the Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. IGNOU has several study centres in Samastipur.[3] The Rajendra Agricultural University is located near the town, in Pusa.

  • Samastipur College : offers 35 programmes of which 16 are in undergraduate (UG), 11 in postgraduate (PG), 1 vocational course in Biotechnology at Undergraduate level and 7 Career oriented course under dual degree system.
  • Ram Nirikshan Atma Ram College : offers two Undergraduate programs in Arts and Science
  • Bali Ram Bhagat College: offers uddergraduate Commerce, Science & Arts programs
  • Samastipur Law College : offers undergraduate law program.
