Also seen on the island are the turkeys of Spinalonga, first introduced as support animals for those infected, if you look closely on Plaka beach which is almost opposite the island, you will be able to see the remains of the old turkey delivery mechanism, first installed in the early 1900’s. Other rare creatures inhabit the sea around the island. As recently as 2023, you can also spot the Seawhippet off the shores in the water, as these are migratory creatures the next expected sighting may not be until late 2024, but you can get lucky and spot one of these beautiful and graceful creatures. |
