The ninth season of the American animated television series, SpongeBob SquarePants, created by Stephen Hillenburg, originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States. The season was first announced on January 3, 2011, yet the season premiered over a year later on July 21, 2012 with the episodes "Extreme Spots" and "Squirrel Record". When it was first announced, it was confirmed that the ninth season would be airing in 2012 but it wasn't announced when. A total of 26 episodes were produced for the season bringing the number of episodes up to 204 and passing the 200-episode milestone.[1] This is the first season to be produced and broadcast in (16:9) High-definition.

Brand new episodes of SpongeBob will start airing and premiere during the 2013-14 season on Nickelodeon.[2] The original airing of the episode Safe Deposit Krabs is the first May premiere of a regular-length SpongeBob episode since 2006.
