I Added two sources out of *many* thousands to be found. The Greeks found a number that cannot be written as a ratio of integers, which we call an irrational number.

Really we should say "irrational ratios", but since probably most readers wouldn't understand what that was supposed to mean, and an explanation would be disproportionate in the context, compromising on "irrational quantities" is perhaps as good as anything.
