This article uses the elevations from the signposts along the Blue Ridge Parkway. While this is understandable, the signs are based on very old surveys from the time that the parkway was built. Just about all of the elevations are off by a few feet (sometimes more) compared to the latest USGS topo maps. Sadly, the Peaks of Otter lose a few feet on the most recent USGS quad (PEAKS OF OTTER, 1991). Flat Top is 3994 ft, Sharp Top is 3862ft, and Harkening Hill is 3372ft. There are newer vertical datums (NAVD 88 specifically), but since the topo maps don't use that yet, it is best to ignore that for now. [[User:128.173.49.45|128.173.49.45]] 20:59, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

The USGS topos use the NGVD 29 vertical datum, so for consistency this datum that should be used for US elevations on Wikipedia. There are newer vertical datums (NAVD 88 specifically), but since the topo maps don't use that yet, it is best to ignore that for now. 128.173.49.45 20:59, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
