Flag of Rome

Why? There are plenty of flags on it that aren't countries (like all 50 American States, Cornwall Cornwall, Abruzzo (an Italian region, Abruzzo), Abu Dhabi Emirate of Abu Dhabi) so why not this one? Cdhaptomos talk–contribs 10:43, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New parameter for accessibility

While reviewing List of teams and cyclists in the 2009 Giro d'Italia I noticed an WP:ACCESSIBILITY problem: that article has several instances of flags, such as " Lance Armstrong (USA)", in which the flag is purely decorative but still has a link. As per WP:ALT#Purely decorative images, if an image conveys no useful info other than what is already available in adjacent text, as is the case here with the "USA", the image should not have a link and should not have alt text.

To support this sort of usage of the {{flagicon}} template, I added a new "decorative=yes" parameter to the sandbox version of {{flagicon}}, documented the new parameter in Template:Flagicon/doc, and tested the result in Template:Flagicon/testcases. If this new parameter is not used, the behavior remains the same as before. Can you please install the sandbox change? This relies on a new template, {{country flagicon decorative2}}, which should be protected just as {{flagicon}} is protected. Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 01:32, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question: I don't understand the need for this. MOS:ICON says that icons should not be decorative, so adding a parameter to this template that allows decorative=yes seems I direct contradiction of that. Alt text should describe function of icon

{{editprotected}} Currently, "{{flagicon|Poland}}" generates a flag that wikilinks to the Poland article and contains the alt text "Flag of Poland". As per WP:ALT#Links, if an image links to a location other than to the image's file page, the image's alt text should describe the function of the link, not the appearance of the image. Therefore, the alt text here should say "Poland" (because that's what the linked-to article is about), not "Flag of Poland" (the image).  In progress We need more than just that patch. Any country data template that has an alt attribute parameter set will need adjustment or removal. That is often used when "the" is needed in front of the country name, such as "Flag of the United Kingdom" instead of "Flag of United Kingdom" by default. No, I strongly disagree. {{flagicon}} is used in thousands of instances to render the flag as a standalone image, without the corresponding wikilink, and in those cases, the image link is necessary. This is precisely why the former instance of wiki markup in the examples above (using {{flag}}) are preferred over the latter instance (and also see the notice very close to the top of the main documentation page at WP:WikiProject Flag Template). In many places, flag of state A is used to represent state B. For example, in Somalia Galmudug the wikilink to Somalia is misguiding. See here for more examples of misleading links which redirect to a wrong country/state/organization. If you really want a wikilink that points to Spanish State, then create Template:Country data Spanish State. We already have precedent for this sort of thing with {{flagicon|Nazi Germany}} vs {{flagicon|Germany|Nazi}}. Wrong redirection - when clicking the flag of the British Mandate for Palestine

Clicking the flagicon of the British Mandate for Palestine currently redirects to "Palestinian Territories" and not "British Mandate for Palestine" ? (An Example: State of Palestine). Please help me fix this mistake. TheCuriousGnome (talk) 17:43, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

United States navy

I'm not entirely certain, but shouldn't {{flagicon|United States of America|naval}} instead be the naval jack: File:Naval Jack of the United States.svg?

Not easily done with this template; it would be better to create something new. Would something like this be ok: {{flagicon link|country|variant|link=article}}? Would you want the alt attribute to be the name of the country, or the name of the article? That would be good. An example for usage would be this: France AS Monaco FC, but instead of the link in the flag linking to France, it links to the French Football Federation. However, I would like to implement it more in the rugby national squad templates as a first step. Narrow flags

How come some flags are much smaller in height than others? Compare United Kingdom with Italy for example. Formion (talk) 12:33, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because different flags are different shapes. If you look at the infobox of Flag of the United Kingdom you will see it contains "Proportion: 1:2", which means that the height and width of the flag are in the ratio 1:2, i.e. the flag is twice as wide as it is high. Contrast this with the infobox for Flag of Italy, which says "Proportion: 2:3", indicating that the height and width of the flag are in the ratio 2:3 (i.e. the flag is 1.5 times as wide as it is high). The Flag of Switzerland (Switzerland) has a proportion of "1:1", i.e. it is square. Since the flagicons are all the same width, the height of each flagicon varies according to the official proportion of the flag. DH85868993 (talk) 02:42, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template:FlagiconLua started

Alignment in table

When the flag or flagicon template is used in a table as in the example on the right, the country names are not aligned. This question is about Template:Flag and therefore could be better placed at Template_talk:Flag. Flagicon doesn't have label. (Your suggestion is good, but it would require a calculation of the right margin based on the size of the image. Martinique parameter yields flag of France

Sorting

Is there a way to stop the flagicon template from being sorted along with the rest of the contents of a cell in a table (without separating the flagicon into a different cell)? For example:

Ideally when sorted, the order should be No winner, Pantani, Pereiro, but the name of the country is getting in the way, and as such is being sorted as Italy, No winner, Spain. Abkhazia

Hi,

When you use the full country name:

{{flagicon|Abkhazia}} produces Abkhazia, which is correct.

When you use the ISO country code:

{{flagicon|ABK}} produces Abkhazia, which is not.


I think I have the correct ISO code (I googled it), please correct me if it isn't.

United States flag

May I make a suggestion for the display of the US flag as an icon? The current default results in a icon of 23x12px. However the US flag has 13 stripes. The mapping of 13 stripes to 12 lines results in blurry stripes: 

United States 23x12px: Icon width of 23px (currently the default)
United States 24x13px: Width of 24px

I don't know what the best answer to this is, but I would suggest either changing the default (for all) to 24px, or having an icon for the US flag with 23x13px (accepting that the proportions are then slightly off from the nominal 10:19). Tony Mach (talk) 10:08, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

TransWiki attempt???

Hello all, Following the instructions from here to export this template onto another wiki, I found out that the template gave two red links, looking for Template:Country data and Template:Documentation, which I can assume is only there for the instructions on how to use the template and is not vital to make the template work. Upon exporting Template:Country data using the same methods, I still end up having Template:Country data show up as a red link and being unable to use the template. BUR for Burma not working?

I can't seem to use Burma's old flag. The FIFA code for Burma is BUR but it shows as this: Burkina Faso. BIR dosen't work either. Myanmar and typing Burma does this: Myanmar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.165.245.105 (talk • contribs)

List of FIFA country codes indicates that "BUR" is an obsolete code for Burma, whereas it's the current IOC code for Burkina Faso, so that's why {{flagicon|BUR}} displays the Burkina Faso flag (Burkina Faso). To produce Burma's old flags, use {{flagicon|Burma|option}}, where the options are listed at Template:Country data Burma, e.g. {{flagicon|Burma|1937}} produces Myanmar, {{flagicon|Burma|1948}} produces Myanmar, etc. DH85868993 (talk) 13:19, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Armenian Revolutionary Federation

Technically it's certainly possible. It wouldn't be allowed, though, since the file is non-free. Non-free files may not be used in Template namespace per WP:NFCC#9, and using them as decorative flag icons fails WP:NFCC#8. SiBr4 (talk) 13:29, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Army

Currently, the template, when filled in thusly: {{Flagicon|CAN|army}}, shows like this: Canada. However, the flag of the Canadian Army is on Commons: Commons:File:Flag of the Canadian Army.svg. Why is it not therefore used in the template? --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 00:21, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Country data Canada had previously used the file Canadian Army Flag.svg (which now redirects to the new file) for the army variant. This file was deleted from Commons on 22 May 2014, so I deactivated the variant and removed it from articles using it on 22 June 2014. I didn't notice the new file since it was only added to articles a few weeks after that, though it was already uploaded on 1 June 2014.
Since the badge in the new SVG is actually an embedded PNG image, and MediaWiki does not anti-alias embedded rasters, the SVG looks rather bad at icon size: . I'll convert it to a PNG image, add that to the template, and undo my automated removals. SiBr4 (talk) 13:33, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Common Wealth of Nations

It's intentional; there is currently no free image of the Commonwealth flag (File:Commonwealth Flag - 2013.svg is fair use), so a blank placeholder is used in Template:Country data Commonwealth of Nations. SiBr4 (talk) 16:53, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Zanzibar 1964 flag

Ive noticed the Zanzibar Zanzibar 1964 flag looks wrong. Its supposed to be blue black green and not black yellow blue. Sorry I would fix it but I cant figure out how. Sputink (talk) 03:38, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split Flags?

Are there split flags? For example, a Canada/US flag. I swear I have seen a Canada/US split, diagonally from bottom left to top right, but I do not know what code that would be if it actually exists. -Uncleben85 (talk) 01:35, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's File:Flags of Canada and the United States.svg. I don't know what you want to use it for, but this template does not allow using a custom flag image, and it doesn't seem like hybrid flags like that would be acceptable to add to the flag template system. Flag of Piedmont and SVG Issues

The Italian province of Piedmont has two flag variants (see the page Flag of Piedmont, which I just created). The one with the gold border is the "official one", although the variants are acceptable. The current {{flagicon|Piedmont}} (that is, Piedmont) is currently the "less official one", without the gold border. The source file for this is the .svg File:Flag_of_Piedmont.svg (here), whereas the gold-bordered source is the .png File:Piemonte_Bandiera.png (here).

Is it possible to switch out the flagicon for the gold-bordered one? Or is .svg preferred, even if it is less official? --(Moshe) מֹשֶׁה‎ 21:28, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Serbia / SRB not working
