The Third Temple is a non-existent, yet sacred place of worship in Judaism, which Christians and Jews believe it will be built in the future. Several organizations have formed in preparation for its building, most of them proposing that its location be the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a site held sacred by Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

Organizations and their Contributions

  • The Temple Institute states that its goal is to build the Third Temple on Mount Moriah. The Temple institute has already made several items to be used in the Third Temple. These include a Golden Lamp stand and Priestly Garments.
  • Recently an organization known as Revava, ambitious to build the Third Temple, has planned numerous ascensions of the Temple Mount. Revava last held a rally at the Western Wall on 2005-04-10 after it announced plans to bring 10,000 Jews to the Mount. This prompted counter-protests by Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza and on the Temple Mount, and by more than 100,000 Muslims in Indonesia and several other Muslim countries. An estimated 200 Jewish protesters were allowed past intense security during the Revava rally, and they did not ascend the Mount.

Misconception

It has long been held that the Dome of the Rock stands in the place where the Second Temple was, but it has recently been pointed out that it stood near the Dome of the Rock, which would be the spot of the Outer Court. Recently, the New Sanhedrin met to discuss the location of the Temple, and this was one of the ones proposed.

Significance to Christians

Some Christians believe that three events must occur to facilitate the second coming of Christ, and Rapture. The establishment of Israel in 1948 was the first event. Now the Third Temple must be built on the original site of the Second Temple, and a red cow or steer must be sacrificed inside of it. It's noteworthy that not all Christians believe that these conditions must be met in order make a prophecy reality.

Progress

While construction on the Temple has yet to begin, several items to be used in the Temple have been made by the Temple Institute. The Temple Institute has completed work on the ephod and the breastplate (choshen), as well as the following instruments:

  • Mizrak
  • Large Mizrak
  • Copper Vessel for Meal Offerings
  • Silver Shovel
  • Silver Decanter for Wine Libation
  • Silver Altar Cup for Water Libation
  • Menorah Cleaner
  • Oil Pitcher for Replenishing the Menorah
  • Frankincense Censor
  • Incense Chalice
  • Menorah
  • Table of the Showbread
  • Gold Incense Altar
