Born in Ireland,[4] Kelly began working as "a teenage photojournalist for the Independent News Group".[5]

Working for the Independent Newspaper Group, he covered the conflict in Afghanistan for several years, before later moving to fashion photography.[6] In 1996, his photo of a kiss between musicians Bono and Liam Gallagher won him global exposure and prompted a change in his career.[citation needed]
