Permissions

Regarding this comment: Jc37 outlined in their comment the technical changes that would be required. Wikipedia:User access levels § Table shows the various permissions that are currently assigned to the sysop user group. Creating a new user group would be a change in policy; I think Jc37 was suggesting that the community enact such a change. isaacl (talk) 23:43, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, very appreciated. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:26, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Beyond My Ken,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Coordinate error

Currently pages with coordinates at the top are not displaying correctly in their desktop preview, so I have been moving them to fix this issue and per Manual of Style. 108.18.207.147 (talk) 19:52, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There must be something wrong with your system, because they are displaying perfectly fine on mine. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:53, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I am still experiencing article preview issues on Google Chrome and Safari laptop browsers stemming from MOS:Order-related coordinate template placement on individual articles. Examples include Shubenacadie Canal, Halifax Harbour and Cape May Canal. 108.18.207.147 (talk) 19:01, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those work fine for me. I suggest that you post about the problem on WP:VPT and see what the folks there have to say about it. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:13, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Commenting on the POV of others

I would suggest it's best to avoid commenting on the POV of an editor as you did here [1]. It's better to focus on what the edit does or does not do to the article. Suggesting a strong POV is a double edge sword. For example, you fought tooth and nail to keep a prior Steve Bannon quote in the article [2] (and a related article [3]). However, when the RfC came consensus was against inclusion. You accuse me of having too strong a POV on the subject but wouldn't that apply to you? I mean you were so certain you were right that you literally copy/pasted content added by likely COI IP editor to the body without even noticing or acknowledging the unrelated Trump sentence. Anyway, if you think there is a POV issue, that is fine. Explain how those edits hurt the article. You haven't done that. Springee (talk) 00:48, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest that you keep your comments off of my talk page. I have no interest in what a civil point of view pusher of your political beliefs has to say, and you are therefore banned from this talk page, indefinitely. I have posted a notice to this effect on your talk page. Any further comments you make here will be deleted without being read. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:14, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AlisonW case request accepted

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW/Evidence. Please add your evidence by June 30, 2023, which is when the evidence phase closes. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. Replaceable non-free use File:Lifeboat cast screenshot.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Lifeboat cast screenshot.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Aspects (talk) 02:56, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Closure

I think your closing message in <this ANI closure> was a bit misleading. That is: the account who created that notice is the one who got check user blocked, not the one the notice was about.

Hello Beyond My Ken,

Proposed decision posted for the AlisonW case

The proposed decision for the AlisonW case has been posted. Statements regarding the proposed decision are welcome at the talk page. Please note that comments must be made in your own section. For the Arbitration Committee, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 15:24, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Precious anniversary

Seven years!

Many thanks!

The arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW has been closed, and the final decision is viewable at the case page. The following remedy has been enacted:

  • For failure to meet the conduct standards expected of an administrator, AlisonW's administrative user rights are removed. She may regain them at any time via a successful request for adminship.

User-specific talk page sections

Regarding this comment: note talk pages where users are required to comment in their own section will have a notice at the top, such as the one on Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/SmallCat dispute/Proposed decision. Although usually it's only on the proposed decision talk page, I believe there have been some cases where the restriction was imposed on other talk pages. isaacl (talk) 20:58, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I saw one of those instances in the past and generalized the rule in my mind. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:30, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Isaacl does one's word count in someone else's evidence section count toward one's total? —DIYeditor (talk) 21:47, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I understand the question. On the evidence page, you can't comment in someone else's section. isaacl (talk) 22:13, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry, talk pages not just any of the project pages. —DIYeditor (talk) 23:00, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to WP:NYHOUSING

Hi Beyond My Ken, I just came across Moving Day (New York City) and saw you wrote it and wrote/worked on other other articles about/related to housing and labor rights in NYC, so I thought I'd reach out to let you know about a task force to clean up and expand articles about housing rights / tenant rights in NY/NYC. No pressure to join but please do if you're interested!

Btw, I looked through the thoughts linked on your userpage and really appreciate them! Wish I'd seen it sooner since there were quite a few relevant warnings that could've saved me some trouble lol. Would you mind if I linked some from my userpage?

Best, TheTranarchist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 19:19, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't mind at all.
Thanks for the invite, but my personal situation is complicated right now, so I'll alternately have a lot of free time and no free time at all, making it complicated to get involved in any projects -- so I've been picking away here and there as I can. I'll keep an eye out for what your task force is doing, as I am very interested in social justice in housing. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:23, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! And no worries, glad to hear you're interested! I don't know about the situation but offer you whatever luck I can, I've been in a complicated position free-time wise and personally too. Now the articles are categorized/marked by importance and there's a request for articles section, I've found just picking something interesting to learn/write about when I've got the time to learn has been very relaxing, the area is wiki-drama free lol. There's also a great book about the history of tenant organizing in the city I highly recommend since it's the most comprehensive I've found: The Tenant Movement in New York City, 1904-1984. Borrowed it from my library to improve Urban Homesteading Assistance Board a while ago and now I've had some more free time I've been devouring it! Wish there was a sequel for 1985-2020 lol. Nomination of Kingdom of North Sudan for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Kingdom of North Sudan is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kingdom of North Sudan (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

JMWt (talk) 15:52, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really something that needs consensus. The description you added just restates the article title in different words which is contrary to WP:SDNONE. Uhai (talk) 20:09, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is a disagreement about content, and the way disagreements about content are settled is by a consensus discussion, so, yes, it really does need a consensus. How editing guidelines are interpreted is very much a matter of editorial consensus. Ypu are apparently of the opinion that the short description is an obvious violation of SDNONE. If so, then it should be quite easy to reach a consensus that agrees with your opinion, so I suggest that you open a discussion on the article talk page and find that consensus. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:11, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really worth a discussion. If you want to it to have a pointless description, that's your prerogative. It's already standard for "in popular culture" articles to have intentionally blank descriptions. Uhai (talk) 20:17, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is that "standard" written down somewhere in a policy or guideline, or is this one of those "everybody knows..." things? Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:23, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's standard because "in popular culture" already tells you what the article is about, so any description is redundant. Uhai (talk) 20:27, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So it's not written down, got it. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:28, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is: WP:SDNONE. Uhai (talk) 20:28, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, that doesn't say a thing about what a "standard" for popcult articles is. It states something more general than that, the "standard" thing is your interpretation. (Incidentally, you get one more response, so make it a good one!) Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:30, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're a pleasant individual. Uhai (talk) 20:31, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I appreciate your appreciation. Please don't post here again. Any additional comments will be deleted, unread. Have a nice day. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:33, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will apologize for my uncivil comment and note that I have created a discussion on the article's talk page. I would like to hear your argument for the short description that you have chosen. I have reverted the page to the state prior to my edit as there's no consensus in favor of any short description currently. Uhai (talk) 22:46, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
