Would you please point out this vandalism? All I did was change the governor back. Spitzer is still governor until March 17, it even points out on the lt. governor's page that he is still lt. gov. Intentional Vandalism to the Nathan Hale page -- but for a good cause!

While teaching students about using websites as sources, I wanted to make an emphatic point about the ability of any user to change a Wikipedia page. So, I went to the Nathan Hale page and changed the word "spy" to "patriotic hero". I left a note in the editing comments saying that I was about to commit a bit of educational vandalism. You reverted the page back -- thus immediately proving the secondary point I made to my students about Wikipedia's amazing community of users -- but you also wrote "Please don't do that." So, here are my questions: 1. Why not? Don't you think that that is a pretty important thing for students to know, especially if the lesson is geared, in the end, towards making them productive users of Wikipedia? And, 2. Is there anywhere else I can tell them to do that? I remember hearing something about an educational wikipedia site . . . but even if I were to use that for the lesson, using it for this would be nearly as powerful as changing wikipedia itself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mkg2008 (talkcontribs) 22:29, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response to my message. I see your point about the needs of the larger wikipedia community outweighing the needs of my class. However, I'd still like to find ways to use Wikipedia when working with my students, simply because so many of them use it as a reference.

Two thoughts:

1. How would you feel if, instead of vandalizing a page, I made a somewhat unobtrusive formatting change? For instance, what if I introduced a carriage return in the middle of a paragraph, or reworded a sentence without changing its meaning? It seems to me that something that didn't damage the page would work well, and would also accomplish the important lesson I want to teach, which is that Wikipedia -- the very site my students are using -- can be altered by any visitor. Using another site wouldn't really teach the same lesson, or, at least, wouldn't do it as powerfully.

2. I'd like to go beyond showing my students that Wikipedia can be edited . . . ideally, I would like to assign them productive research projects that could be used to improve or update Wikipedia entries. I remember seeing, somewhere, a page that listed possible Wikipedia-related academic projects. Do you happen to know where that is?

In any case, thanks for your help. I'm certainly going to show this dialogue to my students next week to demonstrate to them what the Wikipedia community is all about.

Check Point page edits

Why are you removing truthful data from the Check Point page? I see similar information on the Cisco, Netscreen and other company pages. Why is Check point being singled out by Wiki? If you want to edit the page, why not remove the inaccuracies instead? Please restore the edits. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.184.226.122 (talkcontribs)

Lobojo attacked me

I did not attack anybody. I was just using a popular expression. Lobojo attacked me when he made fun of my name when he undid my changes! —Preceding unsigned comment added by SeanSokandro (talkcontribs)

while you're making changes to the Under The Mountain page...

Can you also add in the screenshots that I was trying to add in but couldn't?

you can find the location of the screenshots on a version of the page that a bot automatically reversed for some reason.

I think they're very relevant to that page as they give a visual aspect to the description of the series.

Thanks

Never Said That!

I never said you criticised my opinions. I said it was funny that you threw the rulebook in my face regarding my objections toward the rulebook. Go ahead and fucking block me. It just makes you twice as immature. Silence the ones standing up to you.

Note on SBXLII Spaygate Followup

I was putting a new link in on the story, and a redirect to "Spygate", this one from FoxSports. Please leave it alone, damn it. NoseNuggets (talk) 2:51 AM US EST Feb 3 2008

  • This was not a personal comment, the story broke on February 2, and I was adding information about it, and was putting "more info" on that particular item, as well as a new link from FoxSports.com about that phase of the story as well as the denial. XStudio

Hi Gwernol. I'm not sure to understand why my article about XStudio has been deleted. I tried to follow all the Wikipedia rules and started from a template used in an existing article about a very comparable product: TestLink. XStudio and Testlink are very similar tools (both free, both have almost the same list of features, both dealing with test management). I tried to use the same content organization for my article about XStudio. Could you point me out what's wrong specifically in mine?
Thanks,
--Egavaldo (talk) (XStudio's developer).

Thanks!

pardon me master

but if you check out User:ILike2BeAnonymous edits, they are very similar and they just are not considered to be personal attacks. Fair is fair right? There's nothing attacking about my edits either. I was merely verbalizing my frustrations at an editor which seemed unfamiliar in a belligerent manner towards the wikipedia norms. He seemed to be deficient. I find you to be very proficient, am I now attacking you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Boomgaylove (talkcontribs)

Hey there!

I need your help, if you don't mind. The above article keeps getting a reference inserted which, in my opinion, violates WP:External links#Links normally to be avoided (as listed under point #5: Links to sites that primarily exist to sell products or services). http://shop.elizabetharden.com is a website that primarily exist to sell products or services so I have removed it twice today already after it was inserted by, to us well known, Mimibianca (talk · contribs). The link has, however, been reinserted by F9o0oly (talk · contribs). Since I already removed the link twice, I don't want to breach 3RR even though I believe the link is inappropriate.
What do you think?
Thanks! SWik78 (talk) 17:08, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, how legitimate is the fair use rationale on the images on that article? I don't think those images belong there. SWik78 (talk) 17:15, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you if you are busy but would you, maybe, be able to look at those issues and just tell me what you think? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks. SWik78 (talk) 20:13, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was doing a little Colbert nation stuff. It is amazing how quickly you reverted! That's why I snipped it quickly. The shot's taken, so you probably won't hear from me for awhile02:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)elephant editor

Boris

I was even handed with the story about the busker, both outlining the story and questioning its veracity. The story is currently doing rounds in both the national press and on the web, and justifiably sits under 'controversies'. 77.102.88.66 23:34, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank for your help

Thank you for you help. I have been on wiki for some time now and know how it works. This is a new account due to several reasons. I found your comments ill justed and due to the "nominations" politically motivated. Wiki policy states "Any Wikipedian with an account is welcome to comment in the Support, Oppose, and Neutral sections" therefore under policy I have the right to make comments, which ARE founded. Futhermore, even know your comments were luke warm, they are negaitive mannered IMO. Also, saying that I have stumpled is yet again a personal thought on your part, and is not correct. In any case, thank you again, and remember this was not a personal attack. There is no need to respond to this. Take care. Thright (talk) 18:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)thright[reply]

Hello again!

I think it's pretty obvious that this editor has no concept of some of the basic tenets of Wikipedia editing. I noticed that he/she started reverting your edits on Touch My Body last night. Since 21:31 last night he has made 5 reverts ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5]), the last one after I left this warning on his talk page. Should I report him to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR or do you want to handle it?

Thanks. SWik78 (talk) 14:06, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for your input. SWik78 (talk) 14:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User dick ellershaw

This user seems to have a thing about removing the words ["Portakabin" and "Portaloo"] from Wikipedia as they are Trade Marks. I'd have thought that like "Hoover" those words would now be generic terms, and perfectly acceptable to use. Not sure how to handle this one, can I leave it for you (and other admins) to look at? Talyllyn photos

Oh yes you can - I've swung a cat in here many a time.

Thanks for scanning these in - a great set of photos. The photo of Talyllyn in 1904 always makes me smile as I have a book called Going Loco, which consists of historic railway photographs with humorous captions - see right ;-) —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 23:55, 11 March 2008 (UTC) [reply]
