The town of Varennes-en-Argonne or Varennes forms the capital of the French canton of Meuse, and lies on the river Aire to the northeast of Sainte-Menehould, near Verdun. The 1999 population comprised 691 people.

Historians know the town as the scene of the flight to Varennes of 1791.
