WeatherNation TV is a 24-hour weather TV network that broadcasts coverage of current weather forecasts and events. The channel was founded by meteorologist and entrepreneur Paul Douglas.[1]

Background

The network began in 2008 as a syndicated service for local television stations to outsource their weather forecasts, as well as a service for cable and online outlets.[1] The company didn't use WeatherNation branding on its content, instead using its partners' branding. For four days in May 2010, the company produced a channel for Dish Network called The Weather Cast, replacing The Weather Channel during a carriage dispute.

On March 30, 2011, WeatherNation announced that they would be relaunching their national weather channel as WeatherNation TV, beginning in the second quarter of 2011, with the member cable television systems of the National Cable Television Cooperative being the first to offer the new network.[2] WeatherNation TV began broadcasting on the last week of July 2011.[3] WeatherNation would gain at least one terrestrial TV outlet by October 2011, WHDT in Stuart, Florida, serving the West Palm Beach media market, with translators in Naples, Miami and Boston.[4] WIYC in Montgomery, Alabama also started carrying WeatherNation in October 2011.[5] Further affiliate carriage continued in January 2012, when WeatherNation added affiliates in Minneapolis, Minnesota (KARE-TV);[6] KMYA-DT in Little Rock, Arkansas; KFDF-CA in Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Springfield, Missouri.[7] Its studios are located in St. Paul, Minnesota, while its headquarters and master control facilities are located in Greenwood Village, Colorado.

Availability

In addition to broadcasting on local US television affiliates, WeatherNation is available live via streaming on their website, on Android and Apple mobile apps as well as Roku and select Samsung and Sony TV as well as Blu-ray players.[8][9][10][11] On September 13, 2013, WeatherNation TV launched a streaming channel on the Roku streaming player, which provides the live national feed, on demand video and local weather conditions and forecast.[12]

WeatherNation launched on DirecTV channel 361 on December 16, 2013, one channel over from The Weather Channel. The launch occurred as DirecTV renegotiated its contract with The Weather Channel.[13] When DirecTV stopped broadcasting The Weather Channel on January 14, 2014, the network was replaced with WeatherNation, so that WeatherNation aired on both channels 361 and 362.[14]
