COI specifics
I have someone in mind who I'd like to write an article about, and I believe I have enough sources to start - however, before I put a bunch of work into research & figuring out if they're actually notable, I need some guidance. The person in question works at the same small organization I do. I'm not their boss or employee, our departments have a completely different hierarchy. We sometimes interact but only for administrative/logistical reasons. Do I need to declare a COI for the organization, or just the person? Should I really just not bother? If someone is able to chat with me privately (email?) about this, I'd be OK with giving more detail. I just want to know beforehand how much anonymity I need to be willing to give up if I want this to be my first article. Thanks! Wineguard (talk) 01:09, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Wineguard, I'm not sure if a COI declaration is necessary, but I do believe that at this point writing about the subject would be giving up a decent bit of anonymity regardless due to your message here. If you are really concerned about it I would recommend choosing another topic :/
- You've done some nice work on the project in the past, keep it up and happy editing! Justiyaya 08:14, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Justiyaya, thanks for looking out! That did occur to me (shortly after making the post). I don't mind this being in my edit history - I was/am more concerned about the disclosure front and center on my userpage. :~) Wineguard (talk) 13:31, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Wineguard Full guidance at WP:COI. Having a COI is not a mark of shame, it is usually a simple statement of fact. Editors can add citations to their own published work and even paid editors (the most serious form of COI) may create draft articles using the WP:AfC process. You are relatively inexperienced, so I suggest you use that process irrespective your precise situation. Incidentally, I'd expect the organisation would be more likely to be notable than individuals who work for it but that of course depends on what sources like these have said about either of them. What Links Here contains pages without links?
Hi, there’s probably something really obvious happening here but if there is then I’m clueless to whatever it is!
Earlier on, I moved To Be Human to To Be Human (Sia song), due to the Sia song not appearing to me to be the primary topic. Soon after moving, I checked the ‘What Links Here’ page for the (now-redirect) To Be Human, and saw around 200 listed wikilinks. Checking again, the majority of these seem to now be listed under the What Links Here page for To Be Human (Sia song) — see here. What’s curious is that some spot-checks reveal that no edits have been made to them since the page move. What’s even more curious is that, when I was spot checking, I couldn’t even find the wikilinks that apparently existed on the pages they apparently existed on.
Does anyone smarter than me have an idea of what might be going on here? Let me know if you need any more information.
Best, user:A smart kittenmeow 04:29, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi A smart kitten, The To Be Human was linked from three templates (see [1] for a way to find templates that link to a particular page) that are link to the song and one or more of them are WP:TRANSCLUDE-ed on probably about 200 pages (and links in transcluded templates are included in incoming link counts): Template:Sia singles, Template:DC Extended Universe, and Template:Labrinth and an editor (Another Believer) updated the links. Navigation templates are useful to update quickly after page moves so the automatic non-linking inside those templates if you're on the page in question works. Skynxnex (talk) 04:56, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Skynxnex Ah, thank you so much! I’ll remember to check templates in future. As I expected, it was something obvious that I hadn’t thought about

Age being calculated wrongly
I spotted an inconsistency on the page Dave Ramsey. The infobox contains {{Birth date and age|1960|9|3}}, and this renders as "Born September 3, 1960 (age 62)". It is now 9 September 2023, and when I went to school that would give his age as 63, not 62. Am I missing something? Gronk Oz (talk) 07:05, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Gronk Oz, I believe that the calculation had not updated itself for the last few days. I did a null edit and the age now shows as 63. TSventon (talk) 07:58, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

- @CrafterNova: Extra columns are caused by too many cells in one or more rows. Some browsers will reveal the extra cells by only having horizontal lines there in the extra column. In Firefox I saw it in the article for Factor VI and von Willebrand factor. I have removed those cells.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:56, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Access list of images I've opened at Commons during the last few hours
I've spent the entire night browsing Commons for photos of specific lamp post shapes and designs, and by the end, I may have had close to a three-digit amount of tabs open, and just when I wanted to save the photos to my HDD in order to sift and sort through them, Firefox crashed. Of course, I'd been lucky enough that I'd done all of this in a private window, so I can't recover it from my Firefox history and not even from my cached DNS.
So, I'm asking, is there a way for some mod, admin, or other tech person at Wikipedia to give me the list of URL requests by my IP (found in my signature below) at Commons within c. the last 6 hours? They should all point to this level, not the actual JPGs. 2003:DA:CF39:B803:8420:2CCC:8EC6:5B2 (talk) 23:55, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Pending an answer by someone technically qualified, I have read several previous answers to similar requests, which stated that Wikipedia does not keep any records of who (either IP users or users with accounts) looks at what in it, only of what edits they make, so on Wikipedia this is not technically possible.
- Moreover, Wikimedia Commons is a separate (though allied) entity to Wikipedia, so you would have to ask there, but I'm confident that the same would be true of that site.
- This is broadly in accordance with widely recognised ethical principles of Librarianship, which prohibit librarians from revealing details of a client's reading and borrowing to third parties. Short version: you might not want an overbearing government to be able to find out what you're reading. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.194.81.165 (talk) 08:17, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

New suggested articles can be submitted at Wikipedia:Articles for creation but it's hard to satisfy our criteria and it's strongly discouraged to write a Wikipedia:Autobiography. Adding Robert Eckels to South Texas College of Law Houston
How do I add Robert Eckels as a Notable Alumni of South Texas College of Law Houston? He does not have a Wikipedia page, but he has a page on conservapedia, plus his career is noted in several mainstream publications. He is a former State Representative of the Texas House of Representatives, and is a former County Judge of Harris County, Texas. Lowerportcaddo2023 (talk) 19:42, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- There first needs to be a Wikipedia article(the preferred term, not the broader "page") about him before he can be added to any lists. If he was a state representative he would meet WP:NPOLITICIAN so as long as you have sources to summarize it shouldn't be too hard to create an article. 331dot (talk) 19:48, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

- Since most things on Wikipedia are not votes, it makes no difference whether the requester explicitly registers a "support" or not. What matters is the arguments from Wikipedia policy, and the requester is free to expound these just as much as anybody else. ColinFine (talk) 10:18, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

- @BJCHK: Generally yes. If the film was shown in the US prior to 1927, its copyright has expired and it is in the public domain. Caveats: if the still includes elements taht were added later such as frames, etc. then it is theoretically possible that those elements are still protected by copyright, so you would need to crop them. - You might do better to cite the book once, and then use short form referencing in the text. Use {{sfn|Krisgabwoosh|2023|loc=chapter 1}} as the format. For example, this sentence occurs in chapter 2.[1] Another thought taken from chapter 4.[2] But finishing with chapter 2 again.[1] If you want to see a fully worked example of SFN, see Frindsbury as an example.

Einstein and Eddington
Some years ago I edited the entry for the film "Einstein and Eddington" as I was concerned that the film contained some serious scientific and historical errors. I inserted a section pointing out these errors and referenced each of my points. Recently I've discovered that this whole section has been deleted. Given the importance of the scientific discovery dramatised in this film I think readers should be aware of the egregious errors that are made. How do I reinstate the section I wrote and how can I be informed if such a thing happens again Reginaldgeorge (talk) 16:03, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Reginaldgeorge It looks like it was removed in 2020 with this edit. No reason was provided. I would suggest discussing this on Talk:Einstein and Eddington. - Bear in mind that Einstein and Eddington is a dramatization rather than a documentary. In any dramatization historical "errors" are perfectly normal and to be expected. The references you provided were very vague, which may be why your contribution was removed. Be sure to cite everything and include relevant page numbers so that your points can be verified. - @Reginaldgeorge: Unless your references specifically mentioned the movie, your contribution was original research (WP:OR), and OR is not permitted in Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 17:32, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Having looked at the diff that 331dot linked to, it seems to me that your edit was original research. You weren't summarizing what reliable sources had said about the film, but synthesizing from the various sources you mentioned and what was in the film. That is not how Wikipedia works. Recent Changes Highlighting
The highlighting that I use in the filter box of the recent changes page has recently just stopped working as of late and I can't get it to work at all. I have tried changing my prefs and everything. Any ideas? Seawolf35 (talk) 01:39, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- @seawolf35: which filters are you highlighting? ltbdl (talk) 11:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- I am highlighting the edits that hit as bad faith or likely have problems. Seawolf35 (talk) 12:08, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- I am experiencing the same issue. It started yesterday or the day before. The first set of changes are visible, but the list doesn't update when "Live Updates" are turned on. I have to "hand-refresh" the page to get a new set of changes. I use the filters

Joyous! Noise! 13:38, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Seawolf35 I suspect that this is something to do with a change mentioned in the current Tech News. I quote:
- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [7]

Can't make edits
Every time I make edits to the page, the changes get reverted to the older version. 114.143.207.2 (talk) 07:10, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Example:[8] Here you remove a bunch of references, and make the text into an advertisment. Don't do that on Wikipedia, if you want to write commercials, use social media. See also WP:COI. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:26, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
Visual editor isn't working anywhere
Last month, I scrambled my password due to extreme mental health/competence concerns. After my symptoms mostly went away, I created a new account using the same scripts. However, the script installer doesn't seem to show up anywhere, and I can't find the visual editor button where I usually found it. Any ideas why? I use Monobook btw. Scorpions1325 (talk) 10:49, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Scorpions1325: Welcome back! Wikipedia:Script Installer says it is no longer maintained, and recommends that you use User:Enterprisey/script-installer instead. If that's what you're having problems with, I suggest you contact User:Enterprisey. In your Preferences > Editing, have you confirmed that the "Enable the visual editor" box is checked? Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:31, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
