'''Temporary semi-protection:''' There has a been recent spate of IP and SPA editing on the article. There are two issues: one involves a dispute about an infobox, currently under discussion on the talk page. The other is the mass changes to all the figures into the article so taht they contradict the sources. Semi-protection may enourage the IPs/SPAs to engage on the talk page. Revision as of 10:19, 31 December 2015

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Semi-protection Content dispute on United Airlines's charter service to Havana. I have removed it because no source was provided but another IP continues to undo my edit. I took it to the talk page and gave them a warning stating that they need to provide a source stating the existence of this service. 97.85.113.113 (talk) 06:16, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Full-protection: Edit-warring being engaged with a claim that encyclopedia doesn't count as a reference. Check edit-history to see that claim. Please lock with my last post with more contents (fully referenced with authentic proofs). 166.48.75.250 (talk) 02:54, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Multiple IPs, who keep adding the same content, are adding WP:UNDUE content. A brief summary is the only thing that is needed, not a whole news article as they're doing. I suspect that the IPs are the employees (and former employees). They've been warned. ❄ Corkythehornetfan01:26, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary full protection: Content dispute/edit warring – Dispute over reliability of sources with regards to oil of clove being used to relieve toothache (WP:MEDRS). Despite on-going talk page discussion, one user refuses to allow consensus to form before reverting to his preferred version, with the stated intention of "remov[ing] lies from the page" ([1]). clpo13(talk) 04:13, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary Protection: Persistent vandalism. Multiple IPs keep adding unsourced cast members. If they do use a source, it's one that doesn't even back up their claims.Crboyer (talk) 05:50, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – IP-hopper repeatedly adding a large number of artists whose genre wasn't within the scope of the article (which as the title says should include rock&roll artists only), but soul, jazz, blues etc. Thomas.W talk 09:12, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – High-profile and contentious AfD (linked from Reddit) likely to attract vandalism/disruptive editing to this article. clpo13(talk) 09:56, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Changes to current year articles

Temporary full protection: (24 hours) Every New Year there is effectively a competition among a few editors to update the current year as time changes through every time zone. This is unnecessary, as Wikipedia is always assumed to be current, and tedious as it happens every 30/60 minutes. There are also often disagreements as to exactly when it becomes the next year as editors often "jump the gun" or make other geographical errors. Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Humanities and language reference desks

Shorten protection/unprotection (whichever is appropriate) - Apparently both pages were semi-protected due to sockpuppetry. However, looking at their page histories, the level of disruption at the time didn't seem to be enough to warrant semi-protection, let alone protection of this length (all the way up until March). I am aware that the desks were semi'd due to IP-hopping, but discussions on the talk page seem to be of the consensus that the length is too much. Potential constructive questions by anonymous users on the said pages could also be affected. Protecting admin Future Perfect at Sunrise did not reply to my message on their talk page. Pinging Elockid (who also briefly protected the two pages before the protections were lifted). If the protection needs to stay for now, I request that the length be shortened: until March seems overkill; maybe a fortnight at most is enough? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:57, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    • I'm currently working on a solution to mitigate the problem. Good news is that it's had some effectiveness in blocking the disruptive edits. I wouldn't be opposed to modifying the protection/unprotection but it would be nice if a heads up was given so that I can make necessary modifications to the filter. ElockidHappy holidays! 03:31, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll put it on the record that I will remain strongly opposed to any lifting or shortening of the present protection. And, frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of people acting as if protecting those pages was some particularly horrible thing to do. If a regular high-profile article in mainspace was hit by this amount of vandalism, we'd have indef-semiprotection in no time, no questions asked. What's the difference? The collateral damage in the case of mainspace articles is much more serious than here, not less. In mainspace articles, the potential edits we are losing are actual, useful contributions to the encyclopedia. On the refdesks, the number of anon contributions that are actually useful to our project is negligible, always has been. And if the OP thought the level of disruption at the time wasn't high enough, they clearly have no idea what they are talking about. Fut.Perf. 09:13, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've been using the reference desk for years and from experience the argument that "the number of anon contributions that are actually useful to our project is negligible, always has been" is inaccurate. While disruption existed here and there, the majority of questions from anonymous users were made in good faith. FPaT, please assume good faith and don't assume that most anonymous contributions to the reference desk are unconstructive; we'd be turning away potential editors in the process. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 13:11, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When it comes to the refdesks, "made in good faith" is not the same as "useful to the encyclopedia". Nothing in this has anything to do with assuming or not assuming "good faith". Yes, we are turning away potential editors in the process – just as we always do, on every page we protect. You have still not explained why this effect would be in any way more serious here than on all the thousands of other protected pages, where IPs would be making actual contributions to the encyclopedia but where nobody is complaining. And to speak of disruption "here and there" is a breathtakingly inappropriate use of understatement. There have been persistent attacks on these pages on a daily basis for the last three months at least. WP:RD/H alone had 12 separate protections, totalling about half the days out of the 90 days prior to the current protection, with an average of less than 4 days from the end of one protection to the onset of the next. Fut.Perf. 14:48, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you suggest any alternatives to protection then? Because based on the discussions on the talk page there seems to be consensus that protection isn't the answer (at least not yet). Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 14:57, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, there isn't any alternative, and given the nature of the criminal harassment that this particular troll's activity have become, I really don't give a fuck about what some people on that talkpage are saying. These pages will remain protected for as long as it takes, and any administrator who lifts it early will be an enabler of harassment. End of discussion. Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
