Stabæk Fotball is the football section of Stabæk IF, a Norwegian sports club from Bekkestua in Bærum, founded in 1912, and current Norwegian Premier League title holders.
Stabæk have played in the Norwegian Premier League since 1995 except from one season, being relegated after finishing second last in the 2004 season. They were promoted to the Premier League in 2005, after only one season in the 1st division, and finished 5th in the Premier League in the consecutive season. In 2008 they won the league title for the very first time, after finishing second in 2007. They've also won the Norwegian Cup once, in 1998, after beating Rosenborg 3-1 in the final.
In 2009 a new women's football team was started within Stabæk IF and was named Stabæk FK. This new team took over most of the players from the bankrupt former Toppserien club Asker Fotball, and it will play in the Toppserien in 2009. This makes Stabæk Fotball the first Norwegian football club with both their men's and woman's team in the premier divisions.
Stadium
Stabæk played their home games at Nadderud stadion until 2008, a multi-use stadium owned by the Municipality of Bærum. It was opened in 1961 and given an overhaul ahead of the 1996 season when the current main stand was built. A small stand without roofing has since been built on the opposite side, giving the stadium a seated capacity of 5,100 and a total capacity of approx. 6,500. The record attendance is an estimated 10,000 spectators, achieved in a cup game against Strømsgodset in 1970.
In its current state, the stadium fails to meet national requirements for hosting football matches at the highest level. Stabæk was therefore working towards moving to a new stadium, after initially seeking to buy and redevelop their current home ground. In 1999 the club settled on Fornebu, the site of a large urban development project. Lengthy negotiations between the club, the municipality and the area's main developer came to an end in 2005 and the plans gained final approval on June 21, 2006.
On the 24th of February the long-time Stabæk-patriot Ingebrigt Steen Jensen became Stabæks new chairman, replacing Mimi Berdal.
The new stadium Telenor Arena cost MNOK 550 (M€ 61) to construct and has an all-seater capacity of 15,600. The club originally planned for a retractable roof but changed its mind due to the high costs involved. The lowest point of the suspended fixed roof is 24 m above the pitch. Construction began in February 2007, and the stadium was finished in january 2009. In January and February two training matches and one AC/DC-concert took place there, before the official opening match; the "supercup final" against cup holders Vålerengen IF on March 8th, one week before the league began.
