- The Principality of Andorra (Principat d'Andorra) is a co-principality with two co-princes with a ceremonial role, a parliament, the General Council, elected in free multi-party elections and a government responsible to the parliament.

Roman Republic
- 100s BC: Present-day Andorra, populated by Celtic tribes, is conquered by the Roman Republic.

Roman Empire
- 27 BC: Gaius Octavianus becomes sole ruler of Rome and as Augustus the first emperor.
- 395: After the death of emperor Theodosius I, the Roman Empire is partitioned in the (Eastern) Roman Empire and the (Western) Roman Empire. The region becomes part of the Western part of the Empire.

Visigothic Kingdom
- 418: The Visigoths establish the Visigothic Kingdom that includes the region.

Arab Caliphate
- 711/716: The Visigothic Kingdom is destroyed by the Arabs a.k.a. the Ummayads.

Kingdom of the Franks
- 795: In the north-east the Ummayads are defeated by the Franks, who establishes the Marca Hispanica, a set of Frankish counties.

Kingdom of the West Franks
- 843: The region becomes part of West Francia.

- 900s: The Frankish counties become more independent and get affilliated to Barcelona.
- 1100s: The valleys of Andorra are disputed by Foix and Urgell.

- 1396: Aragon occupies Andorra.
|
- 1396: The Aragonese occupation ends.
- 1419: The Council of the Land is established, with councillors elected by a limited suffrage.
- 1479: King François Fébus of Navarre, son of the count of Foix, becomes co-ruler together with the bishop of Urgell.

- 1512: Aragon occupies Andorra.

- 1513: The Aragonese occupation ends.
- 1620: When Foix is fully integrated into France, king Louis XIII of France is co-ruler together with the bisshop of Urgell.

French Empire
- 1812: France annexes Andorra.

Principality of Andorra
- 1813: The independence of Andorra is restored.
- 1866: The Council of the Land is replaced by the General Council, elected by suffrage limited to heads of family.
- 1933: The General Council is dissolved by the co-princes and re-elected by an extended, universal male suffrage.
- 1970: Andorra introduces universal suffrage. Only independent candidates can be candidates in the elections.
- 1982: The parliament gets legislative power. The government, is responsible to the parliament.
- 1993: With a new constitution Andorra becomes a parliamentary democracy, where the co-princes only have a ceremonial role, the parliament is elected in free multi-party elections and the government is responsible to the parliament. Political parties are legalized. Andorra joins the United Nations.
- 1994: Andorra joins the Council of Europe.
