The Bailiwick of Guernsey is a crown dependency of the United Kingdom and has a lieutenant-governor as representative of the monarch, a parliament, the States of Guernsey, elected in free elections, with an executive Committee out of parliament.
Roman Republic
  • 50s BC: Present-day Guernsey, populated by Celtic tribes, is conquered by the Roman Republic.
Roman Empire
  • 27 BC: Gaius Octavianus becomes sole ruler of Rome and as Augustus the first emperor.
  • 395: After the death of emperor Theodosius I, the Roman Empire is partitioned in the (Eastern) Roman Empire and the (Western) Roman Empire. Guernsey becomes part of the Western part of the Empire.
  • 400s: After the collpase of the Roman Empire, Guernsey remains outside the Kingdom of the Franks. Celts from Britain settle in Brittany and the Channel Islands.
Kingdom of Brittany
  • c. 851: Erispoe becomes king of Brittany, established by Bretonic tribes.
  • 800s/900s: Vikings invade and raid parts of Brittany.
County of Normandy
  • 933: Guernsey is conquered by Normandy.

  • 1259: England cedes its claim, except for Guernsey and Jersey. Guernsey becomes a English crown dependency.
  • 1835: Guernsey gets a lieutenant-governor, who appoints a bailiff. Out of the practice to consult notables, a states of deliberation evolves. This becomes gradually a parliament.
  • 1945: Guernsey is liberated.
  • 2004: After the reorganization the queen is represented by a lieutenant-governor. The island has a parliament elected in free elections on a universal suffrage, headed by the bailiff, and a chief minister is responsible to the parliament. Laurie Morgan becomes the first chief minister.
  • 2007: Mike Torode succeeds Morgan.
  • 2008: Lyndon Trott becomes chief minister.
  • 2012: Trott is succeeded by Peter Harwood.
  • 2014: Jonathan Le Tocq becomes chief minister.
  • 2016: The function of chief minister is abolished. After the elections Gavin St Pier becomes president of the new policy and resources committee.
