- The Faroe Islands (Føroyar / Færøerne) are a country of Denmark, where the monarch is represented by a high commissioner, the islands have a parliament, the Law Assembly, elected in free multi-party elections and a government responsible to the parliament.

- 800s: Norsemen settle at the Faroe Islands.

- 1035: The Faroe Islands are acquired by Norway.
- 1380: Due to the personal union of Denmark and Norway, the Faroe Islands becomes a joint Danish/Norwegian possession.

- 1536: Denmark and Norway become a real union.

- 1814: At the dissolution of the personal union of Denmark and Norway, Denmark acquires the Faroe Islands.

- 1852: The Faroe Islands are governed by a governor and get a parliament as an advisory body.
- 1906: The parliament is elected in multi-party elections.
- 1940: The parliament functions as a legislative body and the government is appointed by the parliament.

- 1945: The United Kingdom ends the occupation of the Faroe Islands.
- 1946: In the independence referendum a small majority votes in favour of independence. The Faroe Islands declare independence, but this decision is annulled by Denmark.
- 1948: According to the new autonomy act, the Faroe Islands become a country inside Denmark as the Faroe Islands. The queen of Denmark is represented by a high commissioner. The islands have a parliament elected in free multi-party elections on a universal suffrage. The government is responsible to the parliament.
- 1973: When Denmark joins the European Communities, the Faroe Islands remain outside the communities.
