Administrators' newsletter – January 2022
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Autopatrolled
[edit]Hi Schwede66. Hope you are doing well and had a great holiday season. Following our previous discussion back in November about my withdrawal I decided to submit a new request under Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, though I noticed that most requests have been left unchecked or unanswered since late Dec 2020. I was wondering if the process is meant to take that long and the general review process for this type of request is time consuming or if the admin who oversees the page is not active anymore. I thought I should bring it to an active admin's attention. Thank you. Keivan.fTalk 21:40, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Using a German article
[edit]Hi there, just wondering if you could assist me with the protocols around the situation when there is a page in German about New Zealander but the link is strange and it is difficult to open or edit in English. Is it acceptable to create a new page in English Wikipedia - with a slightly different name obviously? The article is Jennie McCormick
I know you are really busy, so this is not urgent. Just a possibility that I might improve or re-create the page. Kia ora
Realitylink (talk)Realitylink
- Realitylink, I'm not sure I fully understand your question. We have de:Jennie McCormick and on the English Wikipedia, the corresponding link is a redirect to Farm Cove Observatory. You can simply edit that redirect (click here) and turn it into an article. But before you do anything else, read Help:Translation first. Does that answer your questions? Schwede66 20:59, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Still a bit confused...I can't edit anything on the redirected link in English, or even open it and I did get a bit lost in that Help Translation thread. So can I create a whole new page for this person in English? You did tell me one time that patience was your second name....much appreciated.Realitylink (talk) 21:15, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Realitylink Realitylink (talk) 21:15, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Reversion of Robert Muldoon edit
[edit]Hello, I see that you removed my edit on the Robert Muldoon page about The Panthers mini-series. I didn't add a reference as the content I added simply links to existing wikipedia pages (Roy Billings and The Panthers miniseries) that already contain the relevant references. Is that not correct? Hello, Schwede66,
I hope you are well. When an article is moved to a bad, new title, unfortunately, the efficient Wikipedia bots immediately change all of the redirects to the page to point to the new target, the lousy title. When you correct a bad page move, please leave a redirect behind, at least for a few hours, so that the bots can correct all of the redirects so they are pointing back to the correct, usually original, page name. When you don't leave a redirect, then valid redirects become broken redirects and they can be mistakenly deleted (as I did in this case). When you do leave a redirect, then the bots can do their work and correct the redirects to the original target.
Of course, if there are no redirects to the page being moved around, this doesn't matter but I imagine that Wikipedia has as many redirects as they have articles so there is a good chance most long-standing articles have a redirect or two. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 23:40, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

The tag is there to encourage further development of the article. Currently, there does not appear to be enough in-depth sourcing about this individual to meet WP:GNG, and while there is a claim that the individual might meet WP:NARTIST, the most notable exhibits are uncited. But if you feel the article, in its current incarnation is up to encyclopedic standards. Okay. Onel5969 TT me 02:06, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- onel5969, how do you know that
there does not appear to be enough in-depth sourcing about this individual to meet WP:GNG
when most of the sources are offline? That's one big assumption. Schwede66 02:09, 8 February 2022 (UTC)- I agree it is an assumption, two are primary sources (4, 6), and the rest appear to be about the field she works in, or the exhibit she is part of, rather than her specifically (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12). Again, the tag is not saying she is not notable, but to encourage development of the article. Regardless, take care. Onel5969 TT me 11:51, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Do not use this tag merely because the page requires significant work.
Schwede66 20:34, 8 February 2022 (UTC)- Susan Tol, could you please comment on the sources (especially 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) and into how much depth they go in covering Gee? Schwede66 18:11, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Kia ora, the sources 1,2, 3 include bios on Elena Gee and mention her more than just in passing. The other references do offer briefer mentions of her from what I recall. These sources are in the artist archives at Auckland Museum and with red restrictions I haven't been able to access them to double check how much she is mentioned in the later sources. I understand the issues with you having to take my word for it. There are more online resources that I will add to the article to amend this. She definitely meets the requirements for notability Susan Tol (talk) 22:24, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Quick Question about Dashes
[edit]Often you have to come in and clean up my edits (thank you and sorry!), fixing my dashes. How can I do them without needing fixed? Sorry to be a pain! Nauseous Man (talk) 17:22, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Nauseous Man, short answer: install the script and run it after you've finished editing an article. Long answer: read MOS:DASH, internalise it and use the correct dash while you edit. If you use the source editor, the endash and emdash are the first items listed in the menu "Wiki markup" underneath the text window. And don't feel bad when I tidy up dashes after you are done; with the script, it's literally three button clicks. I don't mind doing it. Schwede66 17:37, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Re your insertion of full death date in the Lead: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography states "The opening paragraph should usually have dates of birth and (when applicable) death. These dates (specific day–month–year) are important information about the subject, but if they are also mentioned in the body, the vital year range (in brackets after the person's full name) may be sufficient to provide context." Given that the date of death is also included in the Infobox and in the final para, I really see no point in also including it in the Lead. Roundtheworld (talk) 09:21, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Roundtheworld, yes, it does say that. But I’m not sure why as almost every editor provides the full dates. You hardly ever see it being done any other way. If you feel strongly about it, please do revert me; I don’t mind. Schwede66 14:46, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

March songs

Now, you can also listen on YouTube, and more music, the piece by Anna Korsun begins after about one hour, and the voices call "Freiheit!" (freedom, instead of "Freude", joy). Music every day, pictured in songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:29, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

- Well, the Prayer was on the German Main page on 5 March, and could have been here sooner because it was written in English first, but we had to wait for an RfC if we may mention Ukraine at all these days. No comment. - Nabucco: I know little about OTD, but if it's more or less the same every year, could you change the link now that it is GA? Beginning in 2023, we'll have the 300th anniversayry of a bunch of Bach Cantatas. What is the way to have a few mentioned there? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:12, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Why did you tag Herries Beattie with underlinked? They're a lot of wikilinks in the article related to the article itself. SoyokoAnis - talk 13:26, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
- SoyokoAnis, I've edited the article and apart from a general copy-edit and tidy up (including link removal as per WP:OVERLINK), I added 17 blue links and 2 red links (if I counted correctly). That many additional links meets my definition of underlinked. I'm happy to answer any further questions; please fire them at me. Schwede66 23:09, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
