• AbuseFilter editors and maintainers can now make a CAPTCHA show if a filter matches an edit. This allows communities to quickly respond to spamming by automated bots. [1]
• Stewards can now specify if global blocks should prevent account creation. Before this change by the Trust and Safety Product Team, all global blocks would prevent account creation. This will allow stewards to reduce the unintended side-effects of global blocks on IP addresses.

Project updates

• Nominations are open on Wikitech for new members to refresh the Toolforge standards committee. The committee oversees the Toolforge Right to fork policy and Abandoned tool policy among other duties. Nominations will remain open until at least 2024-08-26.

@J2009j: I have no experience with Simple Wikipedia so I'm not familiar with their guidelines or how they work. There's an entry here at Michael Graziano that was accepted by Articles for Creation in 2010, likely because the subject met WP:NACADEMIC (see this section on the talk page) – which has different requirements than the General notability guideline. NACADEMIC is one English Wikipedia guideline that I'm not very familiar with. I tend to avoid academic articles at AfD and AfC unless they are an obvious fail. You are free to nominate it for deletion but I have no clue if the subject meets NACADEMIC so I won't be of much help. Happy editing, C F A 💬 15:51, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Those are two different people. The one on Wikipedia is a scientist, and on simple wikipedia- that is a scammer. Two completely different pages. So I do not understand what is happening here. @J2009j: Huh. You're right. They are both described as a "scientist and novelist" but are about different people. The Simple Wikipedia page was created last month by an IP and has not been edited since. Again, I'm not familiar with Simple Wikipedia's notability guidelines or deletion processes, but I assume they're similar to here. Thank you for reviewing my draft article on Michael Beil (Draft:Michael Beil). I read that the submission was declined. Could you perhaps elaborate a bit on the two critiques? I have already, as you requested, removed the external links from the main text.

1. I've been working very hard on supporting every statement in the article with reliable sources. Could you please point out some examples of statements or passages that are not adequately supported and/or sources that are not considered reliable?

2. I've be sifting through the article (and had several colleagues of mine read it) in search for peacock terms, promotional tone or language that is otherwise not neutral, and I can't find out what seems to be so problematic. I do admit that the text isn't bone dry, but I've read many Wikipedia articles on classical composers and their music that aren't. If you see any problematic wording, could you please point out one or two examples?

As you can see, I've been working on the article for a very long time and I would really like to see it published.

@RDiependaele: Hi, right now your draft reads like an essay. Personal interpretations and analysis do not belong in Wikipedia articles (e.g.: The realization of such compositions also requires complex production conditions, and very disciplined actions and skilled theatricality on the part of the musicians. Therefore, they are usually created in close collaboration with the performers., Recognizable quotations from existing works by other composers are inspiring building blocks for Beil because of the emotional charge or the references already attached to them. It is those connotations that the composer uses as material – a new meaning that can fade or appear subsequently by incorporating the quotations in new musical contexts., Those compositions, which were in line with the usual conventions of their genres, at the same time sharpened his interest in the visual dimensions of concert performance. In this sense, they helped create the ground for Beil's later artistic work, which focuses on the interaction between sound and image., etc. Some parts are also blatant advertising (e.g.: Beil makes his own scores, MAX patches and tapes available simply and free of charge through his website.). I also don't see how the subject meets either the notability guideline for musicians or the general notability guideline for people, which is something you'll have to prove in order for your draft to be accepted. Article Review/Edit Request

Hi @CFA: I am a COI editor connected to the long-term biobank study UK Biobank and I have suggested some improvements to the article. My ideas include changing the layout, updating the page with recent discoveries and missing information, and removing any information which is irrelevant.

I have created both a draft of how I think the article should look in my sandbox, and a section by section explanation of each change as a request on the UK Biobank talk page. When you have the time, would it be possible to please receive your advice on the article in my sandbox, and maybe implement some of the changes which you feel are appropriate on the current existing page?

@Bodhipup: You are free to resubmit if you disagree with my assessment of notability. Her position is not exactly clear in the article. Wikipedia articles should only have external links in the "References" and "External links" sections. They do not belong in the body of the article, where wikilinks should be used instead. List of BL dramas

However, is it possible for you to change back the article name to 'List of BL dramas' instead of 'List of yaoi dramas'? As pointed out in Yaoi article, 'Yaoi' is more closely associated with Japanese gay animes and mangas, whereas 'BL' and 'Boys' love' is the common term for the television dramas and films featuring gay romance throughout Asia, especially outside Japan, as BL dramas also mainly come from Thailand, South Korea, and Taiwan. @Raayaan9911: They did not "introduce incorrect information into articles" and their edits were certainly constructive. They copy-edited the lead which previously read "born on 17 January 1992 in west Africa,Ghana." to "Gregory Mallard is a Ghanaian-British actor." Hello, CFA,

What happened here? Why are you moving valid redirects to your User space where they are tagged for deletion? This is not how things are done. If you want to move a draft or article to a page that has a redirect, then go to the page with the redirect, using Twinkle, tag it CSD>G6 Move and in the field, put the name of the draft or article that you want moved and an admin will take care of it.

The way you handled it causes us to lose all of the page history that comes from the original redirect and it ends up on a deleted page in your User space which is kind of ridiculous. If you are going to do page moves, you really have no reason to use your own User space. Let's work on keeping all of the page history with a particular page title together, whether it's the current page history or the deleted page history. Thank you. Liz ^{Read! Hi. I got a message from you saying my intersex healthcare article was rated B-class, but the talk page of the article says it's C-class. Which class is it? I'd just like to know so I can better figure out if and how I should improve my article. Thanks :)

@Urchincrawler: It looks B-class to me, but I have no real experience determining article ratings. To a certain extent, it's completely subjective. You can see the B-class criteria on this page and request an independent assessment here, if you're interested. Rater says it is B-class so I'll just go with that, but in the end ratings don't really matter unless the article is a stub that needs to be categorized or has gone through the Good Article or Featured Article review process. Feature news

• Editors who want to re-use references but with different details such as page numbers, will be able to do so by the end of 2024, using a new sub-referencing feature. You can read more about the project and how to test the prototype.
• Editors using tracking categories to identify which pages use specific extensions may notice that six of the categories have been renamed to make them more easily understood and consistent. These categories are automatically added to pages that use specialized MediaWiki extensions. The affected names are for: DynamicPageList, Kartographer, Phonos, RSS, Score, WikiHiero. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match. Thanks to Pppery for these improvements. [3]
• Technical volunteers who edit modules and want to get a list of the categories used on a page, can now do so using the categories property of mw.title objects. This enables wikis to configure workflows such as category-specific edit notices. Thanks to SD001 for these improvements. [4][5]

Bugs status

• Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with Talk:WP: so that their titles start with Wikipedia talk:), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/ instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in phab:P67388.
• Editors who volunteer as mentors to newcomers on their wiki are once again able to access lists of potential mentees who they can connect with to offer help and guidance. This functionality was restored thanks to a bug fix. Thank you to Mbch331 for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 18 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.

• The application deadline for the Product & Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Members will help by providing advice to Foundation Product and Technology leadership on short and long term plans, on complex strategic problems, and help to get feedback from more contributors and technical communities. Selected members should expect to spend roughly 5 hours per month for the Council, during the one year pilot. Please consider applying, and spread the word to volunteers you think would make a positive contribution to the committee.
