Files of non-free cover art being used in a decorative manner in Clark Ashton Smith#Bibliography. A non-free book cover is generally allowed when it is used as the primary means of indentification in a stand-alone article about the book itself as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3, but a much stronger justification for non-free use is typically required when used in other articles, such as articles about the book's author. These particular covers are not themselves the subject of any sourced critical commentary within the author's article, so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking. Moreover, there are already a number of freely licensed files of books covers being used in the article, so adding these two non-free ones is not something needed per WP:NFCC#1, especially for two books mentioned as entries in an embedded list (see WP:NFLISTS) in Clark Ashton Smith#Wildside Press. If the two books are notable per WP:NBOOK for stand-alone articles, then the files can be used those articles; they should not, however, be used in the author's article. Delete. Textbook NFCC violations. Just as nonfree album covers can't be used in musician discographies, nonfree book covers can't be used to illustrate author bibliographies (or, in general, as illustrations in author bios). Comment: I'm not sure if there's a technical reason it cannot be cropped; in fact, it looks like there is a cropped version here. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask at WP:GL to see what they say. Otherwise, I agree that there only really needs to be an image of Wheelock. In addition, since he was Mayor of Lubbock from 1909 to 1915 which is before 1923, maybe there's a free image of him (an old newspaper photo, etc.) from around that time which can be licensed as {{PD-US-1923}} or {{PD-old-70}} or something similar; for example, something like this might be old enough for PD if it can clarified when the photo was published or taken. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:59, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

- User:Fastily, are you implying that fair use images should never be stored at resolutions higher than those in the articles? Because not only is that an overly narrow misinterpretation of policy, it is also nonsensical because of different user settings displaying images at different sizes. I see no reason not to resize the image. - User:Czar, I've thought about this and I have to say that, while you may very well generally be correct, I have to disagree in this specific case. The image in question is not a random screengrab taken by a passing user, but one made under a specific setup with an environment that is no longer generally used, or even readily available. Thus, preserving the image as-is has value above and beyond mere referential use. Furthermore, the so-called "sprite detail" is actually highly relevant for a game such as this one. The dithering observed in many of the tiles, for example, is a technique no longer used in modern game design, and could quite possibly help a reader identify the game. Historical preservation is important work that's outside our scope as an encyclopedia. The question is how this non-free image can meet our own fair use content guidelines. The screenshot is used in the production information section of Autumn Sonata with a caption of "Liv Ullmann and Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata." There is no critical commentary of the image itself in the article, it is being used to show two of the actresses in the film, it does nothing to increase the reader's understanding of the film and its exclusion is not detrimental to the understanding of the film, thereby failing WP:NFCC#8.
