On 23 June 2024, gunmen opened fire in Derbent and Makhachkala in the Dagestan republic of Russia. In Derbent, they set fire to the Derbent Synagogue, the only one in the city.[2][3] At least one police officer was killed.[4] A shooting also occurred in Makhachkala where an officer was killed and six were injured.[5][6] At least two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a police post were targeted.[7]
