A son of [[Lancelot Royle|Sir Lancelot Royle]], a wealthy businessman, he was educated at [[Harrow School|Harrow]] and [[Royal Military Academy Sandhurst|RMA Sandhurst]]. He joined the [[Life Guards (United Kingdom)|Life Guards]] and subsequently the [[Special Air Service]] (SAS).
