Between 2005 and 2014, Borrero was the medical director of the [https://www.hospitalmetropolitano.org/en/home Hospital Metropolitano] of [[Quito]]. He was the president of the Association of Private Hospitals and Clinics from 2007 to 2014. He is the dean and administrator of the Faculty of Medicine of the [https://www.udla.edu.ec/ Universidad de las Americas] (UDLA).
