History
Banning Dam is fifteen years older than nearby Sherwood Dam (1904), one of the oldest still standing in the state. It is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Lake Sherwood.[1] The structure is located within the Lake Eleanor Open Space.
Named for its builder, "Captain" William Banning, the dam creates Lake Eleanor, not to be confused with Lake Eleanor in Yosemite — both are reservoirs.
