The Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE), founded in July 2016, is a federally owned company based in Peine, Lower Saxony, Germany.[1] It was founded on the basis of the law passed in 2016 on the reorganization of the organizational structure in the area of final disposal. As a designated developer and operator of final storage facilities for radioactive waste, it belongs as a public company to the business area of the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. The licensing and supervisory authority is the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management.[1]
Their statutory tasks are the search for a repository for highly radioactive nuclear waste and the operation of the repository. The Asse-GmbH, the Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Bau und Betrieb von Endlagern für Abfallstoffe, and parts of the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz were merged into it on December 20, 2017.[1][2][3][4]
In the final report of the Kommission Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfallstoffe, the company was referred to as Bundes-Gesellschaft für kerntechnische Entsorgung (Federal Society for Nuclear Disposal).[5] In the amendment to the Site Selection Act of June 2016, it is called neue Bundesgesellschaft (new federal company).[6]
The members of the Supervisory Board were appointed in July 2017.[7]
