The Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) was founded in July 2016 as a federally owned radioactive waste storage company based in Peine, Lower Saxony, Germany.[1] It was founded on the basis of a law passed in 2016 on the reorganisation of the structure in the area of final disposal for nuclear waste. As a designated developer and operator of final storage facilities for radioactive waste, it falls under the remit of the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, although it does so as a public company. The licensing and supervisory authority is the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management.[1]

Their statutory tasks include searching for, and operation of repositories for highly radioactive nuclear waste. The Asse-GmbH, the Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Bau und Betrieb von Endlagern für Abfallstoffe, and parts of the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz were merged together on December 20, 2017.[1][2][3][4]

BGE has been the operator of the Asse II mine, the Konrad mine, and the Morsleben radioactive waste repository since April 2017. The company also has offices in Berlin and Gorleben.

In the final report of the Kommission Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfallstoffe, the company was referred to as Bundes-Gesellschaft für kerntechnische Entsorgung (Federal Society for Nuclear Disposal).[5] In the amendment to the Site Selection Act of June 2016, it is called neue Bundesgesellschaft (new federal company).[6]

The members of the Supervisory Board were appointed in July 2017.[7]
