Fat Kwong Street was originally a short street in Hung Hom. In 1967, the government proposed to build a new road link between Hung Hom and [[Mong Kok]] via Ho Man Tin, by connecting Fat Kwong Street to Pui Ching Road.<ref name="roadlink">{{cite news |title=Road link between Hunghom and Homantin |work=South China Morning Post |date=28 April 1967 |page=6}}</ref> To facilitate this scheme, a flyover was built over [[Princess Margaret Road]] at a cost of around HK$2.1 million, which was completed in 1970.<ref name="aheadschedule">{{cite news |title=Project ahead of schedule |work=South China Morning Post |date=8 January 1969 |page=6}}</ref><ref name="opensforuse">{{cite news |title=Flyover open for use |work=South China Morning Post |date=14 February 1970 |page=6}}</ref> The new road link was constructed, in part, to serve major government housing developments in the Ho Man Tin area.
The eastern part of Fat Kwong Street was closed in September 1970 due to landslides.<ref name="roadclosed">{{cite news |title=Hunghom road closed |work=South China Morning Post |date=23 September 1970 |page=6}}</ref> Major repairs were required, and the street did not reopen until June 1971.<ref name="streetrepaired">{{cite news |title=Street repaired |work=South China Morning Post |date=3 June 1971 |page=5}}</ref>
