Samu is the nickname given to a prehistoric man whose remains were found near Vértesszőlős, Hungary.
Only a part of the occipital bone was found.
The discovery was made on 21 August 1964 during a dig led by László Vértes, and the fossil was named Sámuel, 21 August being the name day of biblical judge Samuel.huh<!--reference for this? The Samuel page claims 20 August-->
It has since become widely known as Samu, a Hungarian short form of the name.

Hungarian anthropologist Andor Thoma (1928 - –2003) initiallyyear needed described it as Homo erectus seu sapiens paleohungaricus. ItThe hasfossil sinceat beenthe datedtime was believed to be about 350500,000 years old,. consistent with either late Homo heidelbergensis or early Homo neanderthalensis.
Later analysesyear needed have revealed a significantly younger age, at between 250,000 and 300,000 years old,
and the fossil is now classified as Homo heidelbergensis.

The Vértesszőlős archaeological site itself had been discovered by Márton Pécsi]] in 1962. Also found at the site were two child teeth, stone tools and a fireplace. The site is now open to the public.

<!--so it was *not* vandalised, and this is just a record of an erroneous news report from back in 2009
In early 2009 news sources reported that a fourteen-year-old girl vandalised the remains. Since the museum was at that time closed for winter and was inspected twice a week, the vandalism was assumed to have taken place between January 28 and February 4. On February 9 it was reported that the Vértesszőlős museum only housed a replica of the prehistoric bone, and the original is safe in the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest.
