The river's [[headwaters]] are in the [[San Bernardino Mountains]], on the west side of [[San Gorgonio Mountain]] within [[Sand to Snow National Monument]].
The river flows south and then east to its [[confluence]] with the [[Whitewater River (California)|Whitewater River]] in the western [[Coachella Valley]]. It drains the land east of the [[San Gorgonio Pass]], while the South Fork of the [[Santa Ana River]] drains the land west.
