On May 31st 1990 at the Kemper Open played at Avenel in Potomac Maryland, Fitzsimons mistakenly hit the ball of his playing partner Willie Wood. Wood then mistakenly hit Fitzsimons' ball. This resulted in a two shot penalty for Wood who ended up missing the cut by one shot. There we several gallery members who watched the players hit the wrong ball but remained silent. As an aside, the third player in the group, Hale Irwin, ended up winning the US Open the following month in a sudden death playoff against Mike Donald. |
