Background and composition

"Wild Life" was written by band members Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle as well as Josh Nathaniel. It was produced by Kutzle and Nathaniel. The song's lyrics describe wanting to shut out pain and struggles and excitement for every new day. Tedder further described the background of the song in an interview with Today:[5]

I co-wrote this with one of the guys in my band, Brent [Kutzle], after watching the movie Clouds about Zach Sobiech's life. He passed away at age eighteen, he got cancer at twelve, had like twenty surgeries. And every single day is a blessing, every single day is a gift, we're not promised another moment, and I've had enough experiences in my life to realize that what COVID has done for me, and I think for so many people, is that it's all about carpe diem, seize the day. You've got one wild life, one wild run around the sun, as many times as you can, like seize it, do it, don't put it off, stop talking about stuff, go do it.

— Ryan Tedder
