He was educated at [[Methodist College Belfast]], and [[Queen's University Belfast|Queen's College, Belfast]].<ref name=nub/> He also studied at [[King's Inns]] and [[Gray's Inn]].<ref name=dib/>
He was a [[High Court (Ireland)|High Court]] judge from 1924 to 1939, and from 1939 to 1940 served as a judge of the [[Supreme Court of Ireland|Supreme Court]].<ref name=nub>{{cite web|url=https://www.newulsterbiography.co.uk/index.php/home/printPerson/753|title=William John Johnston|work=Dictionary of Ulster Biography|access-date=18 December 2023}}</ref> He later became the Commissioner of Charitable Donations and Bequests.<ref name=nub/>
