Sir Roland was the greatest politician that the Bahamas has yet seen. It is a pity that we cannot publicly appreciate his stature because he is not black but rather a descendent of white European ancestry. While the Bahamas has become a travel destination for the sophisticated traveler, one must admit that the political scene down here has declined in sophistication since Sir Roland's day!

In response to the comment above, readers should note that in another wikipedia article it is stated that "The nation had previously been governed by an oligarchy of white merchants known as 'The Bay Street Boys' who had suppressed the black majority under a system of segregation that has been compared to the southern United States and South Africa. Pindling led the Bahamas to independence from Britain on 10 July 1973 and is considered the architect of the modern Bahamas, through initiatives such as basic social security, and housing projects as well as negotiating major tourist developments." See the article on [[Lynden Pindling]]. Thus it is obvious what his legacy is in the present day Bahamas.
