Some evidence suggests Tamil could be over 10,000 years old, and the oldest known written records date back to the 3rd century BCE. The Archaeological Survey of India has found about 60,000 Tamil inscriptions in Tamil Nadu, including epigraphic records on rock edicts and "hero stones". Tamil also has the oldest extant literature among Dravidian languages.
